At their triumphant Lollapalooza headlining set, Wilco debuted new suits and a new tune, “One Wing.” Now comes word that a follow-up to the wonderful Sky Blue Sky should be out by spring. Jeff Tweedy offered this progress report to Albany radio station WAMC. Via Billboard:

Tweedy says he expects Wilco will “allow ourselves a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument. Last time around, it was more of a document.”

Tweedy told WAMC he’s going through a phase where he “kinda hate[s]” all of Wilco’s six prior albums, because “none of them are a statement that I would be comfortable making right now at this point in my life. They all served their purpose, and in that respect I’m proud of all of them.

“But as something that feels artistically in keeping with who I am today, I think that they are inevitably going to fall short of that as time goes on. I mean, they just don’t continue to mean the same things to me, and a new record is kind of where it’s at.”

Video and MP3 of “One Wing” (and another new song) right this way, if you missed it the first time…

Also where it’s at: another promising WIP “Sunny Feeling.” This live recording of it from Indianapolis comes from FuelFriends.

It’s going to sound even better with overdubs. Wilco (and Jeff solo) have a few more tour dates before they head to the studio. Check ‘em.

Wilco, on a roll, plays Paramount Tuesday
But now poor Popeye has to worry about a more lyrical adversary: Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. On Jan. 25, King Features released the first hand-drawn animated short starring Popeye in 30 years. No ordinary cartoon, the black-and-white clip is a ...
Wilco feeling the whole love (with video)
has been lauded as one of 2011’s best by the likes of Rolling Stone and NPR — The Vancouver Sun also gave it a nod — and many have agreed that main man Jeff Tweedy and company had hit a creative mark unseen since Wilco’s 2002 classic, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

is it just me, or does tweedy look a little like jack black?

  4. Maybe a little like Jack Black…but a lot like Meatloaf.

  5. I really want to be excited about a new Wilco record, but that last one was such a disappoint to me. I mean, rhyming “walking” with “talking”…and a return toward the fell of A.M.? It felt like listening to an aging Jeff Tweedy with a talented but unexciting band of session musicians. It felt like a letdown.

The last album might not have been up to par with the last two albums, but it also didn’t deserve the drubbing it received in some circles. A couple of the tracks are as strong as anything on their previous albums.

I loved Sky Blue Sky and though there were a couple of DOA tracks like “Walken” and “Side with the Seeds”, the b-sides (notably “Glad It’s Over”) made up for it. “Leave Me Like You Found Me”, “Sky Blue Sky” and “Please Be Patient With Me” are some of the best songs Tweedy has ever written. But even more than the songs on the record I loved the sound of it. Hearkened back to great ’70s albums like a combination of On the Beach and Countdown to Ecstasy, both ragged and precise at the same time. I hope they continue in that direction.

  8. boy, that was one bore-wing song.

  9. I liked Sky Blue Sky, but it took a long time to grow on me, unlike any of their prior albums. Hopefully, the next one will have a little more kick to it. It’s a good sign if Jeff is dissatisfied with all of the band’s previous albums. Maybe he’ll start experimenting and get a Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 2. (I hope Jeff doesn’t read that…)

tweedy looks more like kd lang

  11. i’m as bored with wilco’s new material as he is with their old stuff. but since he gets final say, I don’t suppose that matters much, and i’ll just keep listening to the first three records when i need a wilco fix.
