It’s been a year and a half since Dan Rossen and his longtime songwriting partner Fred Nicolaus dropped us a demo of “No One Does It Like You” as a tease to the duo’s first Department Of Eagles album since their years-old debut Whitey And The Moon UK. It wasn’t that D.O.E.’s next album was then imminent, per se, but I also don’t think things weren’t supposed to take quite this long to launch — you can probably blame that on Grizzly Bear’s nonstop activity and various offers they could not refuse. Anyway the time has finally come, or it least it will come in about six weeks, when In Ear Park makes its way out on 4AD. We heard the title track earlier this summer, and now it’s the album version of what logically must-be-the-album’s-best-song because-it-is-really-good, “No One Does It Like You.”

The demo was a pretty perfectly dusty, pared down Dan pop song; the LP version, like the rest of In Ear Park, gets Grizzly soundscaper Chris Taylor’s inimitable touch on production, and the full on GB sans Droste treatment (with Chris Bear on drums). Dan had this to say about the album, although it fits the track pretty perfectly, too:

Fred and I had license to try some things that I could never get away with otherwise, but we still went for the lushness and and attention to sonic detail that Chris [Taylor] and I always want out of a recording.

Try it:

If you want to compare, the demo’s here. In Ear Park is out 10/7 via 4AD. Preorder here and you’ll get a free “No One Does It Like You” 7″, with a b-side of Dan’s rather memorable Rossenization of Jo Jo’s “Too Little Too Late.”

Dan is so blessed.

I might be wrong about this but didn’t Department of Eagles release the Cold Nose in 2005? So that would mean we’ve been waiting for 2.5/3 years now…

Yeah, I just listened to the rest of In Ear Park. It has leaked and is very very good. It will definitely do until the new Grizzly Bear album.
