Guns N’ Roses’s new single surfaced online last week and was quickly scrubbed from YouTube. But now it’s back! For now. As we learned earlier this summer, “Shackler’s Revenge” (GN’R's first official release since “Oh My God” in ’99) will be included on Rock Band 2, out next month. Message board chatter suggests it was penned by Buckethead (Axl’s former axeman has a song called “Shackler“). The demonic vocals and industrial/metal guitar assault suggest a Marilyn Manson track gone worse. Consider with the other Chinese Democracy leaks and you should be getting a sense of what the album (which Axl began work on in 1964) might sound like, and whether it’ll be worth a trip to Wal-Mart. Above is the alleged “Shackler’s Revenge” artwork, according to Blabbermouth.

Chinese Democracy is out sometime in the future or not. Insert your own Dr. Pepper joke here.

Scott, making a rare appearance! Too bad it had to be a G’n'R story :p

  5. grover  |   Posted on Aug 20th, 2008

the chorus is actually ok but jesus you can hear each overdub through the shitty stream

  6. Mike  |   Posted on Aug 20th, 2008

My ears are bleeding. Make it stop. Make it stop. Make it stop. Please.

  7. I like to shoot jizz in my mouth

  8. Strangely, it sounds more like Avenged Sevenfold than Avenged Sevenfold sound like Guns N Roses.

  9. One of the best songs I’ve ever heard in my life.

  10. i look forward to not listening to one single new Guns ‘n’ Roses song
    from Chinese Democracy.

  11. this is hilariously awful

  12. Right  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Why would anyone come to this site to get an opinion on Guns N’ Roses? You people are too busy sucking Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s dick.

Like any of you hipster fucks listen to hard rock or metal.

Go listen to the new Ra Ra Riot album.

  13. cecil  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Only the Best is done by the best and this songs prooves it

    Hail Axl; Guns N’ Roses

  14. oh dear, that is definately one of the worst journalism I have ever read.. even though if the song would be horrible I still couldn’t read what this guy has to say about it.

but for Shackler.. I actually really dig that song

  15. What the fuck is Stereogum????? We will see when chinese democracy comes out who will be praising this album…you strokes!

  16. Name  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Seriously this hipster/indie music you guys listen to is fucking annoying. I’d rather listen to a bad GNR song than most anything in the “Gum Mix”.

  17. dsven  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

I probably would have enjoyed this more back in 1993.

WTF Axl, how does it take 15+ years to create something so bloody average?

  18. Uh oh, looks like the angry GnR longhairs are out in force!

  19. Soda Bat  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

It’s a shame theres no new Arnold movie for this to be tied to!

    • b.LOUD  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

      LOL!
      Brilliant!

What about that new Vin Diesel move, Babylon …… something?
      Where my bros @?

      • lomlom  |   Posted on Oct 2nd, 2008

you are soooo gay man, nobody is in here to talk about your secret desire to have Vin diesel so leave before the admin bands you

  20. Ow Owwww  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

I agree with an above comment that the chorus is at least tolerable, but the rest of this is sub-Gravity Kills sludge. I also agree with the couple of dudes who got here via Google search for new GnR in the sense that I would rather cringe at Axl than pretend Bloc Party or Black Kids are in any way interesting.

  21. I head that for several years Axl gave up on the album, quit the music industry entirely and started an independent contracting company called “Appetite for Construction”.

  22. there’s just too much going on in this song. doesnt sound good. axl is trying too hard

  23. Mr.Chainsaw  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

The song rules and the critics suck. Period.

    • Pete Fontaine  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Period! End of story! Case closed! I for one am convinced, forevermore done with critics.

  24. muthastone  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

9 times out of 10 Axl Rose will get slammed on a hipster blog like this. But with that aside this song rocks better than anything in their genre.

  25. Born Ruffians  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

I’ve listened to this a few times now and I must say, I think this song is a grower. The more I listen the more I like it. Particularly the chanting during the badass guitar solo.

I don’t like industrial, but this song has some strong melodies. Sounds like old school Offspring before they sucked.

I may actually give the new album a chance if it ever comes out.

  26. Zombie Ray Charles  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

ZOMBIE RAY CHARLES SAYS: THIS SONG IS GREAT YOU LITTLE MOOKA MOOKAS

    • Steve Sanders  |   Posted on Aug 27th, 2008

You can flood this site all you like if you are gonna come up with cool names like that!

Zombie Ray Charles is the greatest internet handle in history!

  27. Kevin  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

hahhaha i literally had to stop after 3 seconds

  28. I love every part of this song !! its great Axl reinvented himself and trust me if you thought this is good wait till you hear the finished album.

  29. dave  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

the worst of the leaked songs thus far, but has more of a chorus than just about all of those songs (minus Rhiad)

  30. New Gnr fuckin suck, Axl is a stupid pirate now and he looks like a joke fuck madison he cant ban me here

  31. ..............  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

    Love it!!!

  32. mullethead  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

So you kids listen to a crappy quality MP3 posted on Youtube and decide the entire album sucks? Good to know that there are a bunch of intelligent, open-minded music fans on this site

  33. brought tears to my eyes

  34. Walt  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

I doubt anyone with any music credibility works for Stereogum, so no big loss here.

  35. Richard  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Devendra Banhart has gone on record as saying that he loves this track. So all of you pretentious, wanna be hipsters mighty wanna think about back peddaling shortly. Look – let’s get this straight for once. You are not cool. You are not quirky. You are not original in any way. That’s why you’re so intolerant. So CUT THE ACT FOR CHRIST’S SAKE. And Scott KNOWS THIS. Why post a shit review knowing your skinny pant wearing demographic are going to shit on it? Nice ‘journalism’ there Scott. Get a fucking job. This site is a piece of shit by the way. Nice little ‘players’ n’ stuff. It looks like my little sister made it. Fuck you. OH I just noticed ‘THE COOL KIDS’ LOL! Twats…

    • eric  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Really, it seems you’re being the intolerant one, I’d say.
I don’t see why my opinion should be changed so that it could agree with Devendra Banhart’s.

And I also don’t see the point of coming onto a blog like this that you obviously have no place on and just spewing shit out of your keyboard. Really, the only purpose is so you can refresh this page every 10 seconds to see if some “hipster fuck” has started an argument with you or whatever. Also, I didn’t know that you knew Scott so well. The best thing for people like you to do is to listen to the song, and move on, not to take a piss on a Stereogum comment board.

I’m sixteen years old. Yeah, I enjoy the music that’s covered on Stereogum, but in no way do I see myself as anything original or cool or quirky. On any given day, I’d rather be listening to “THE COOL KIDS” than Guns n Roses.

Also, your sister must be pretty fucking smart.

  36. Coc Party  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Wow, this is actually pretty good.

    I am pleasantly surprised.

  37. steve  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Isn’t playing generic “industrial metal” the last refuge of a shitty band who can’t figure out what to do with their sound? It seems to always work for Danzig. I think Axl Rose probably got into bullshit like God Lives Underwater and Stabbing Westward a couple years ago and it totally blew his mind. Lame.

  38. Karri  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

One of the best songs in a looong time. Been blasting it everyday since it leaked.

  39. indigoguy  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

This a hilarious tune, people who only made it a few seconds in, you have to listen up to 40 secs at least, the part where he goes from singing low to the usual nuts in a blender whine is comedy gold.

  40. Theodore Roosevelt  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

    Holy shit that’s bad.

  41. Absolutely dreadful. That can’t possibly be the final mix. It’s a complete mess.

  42. Higurashi  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Watch out indiefucks, the mygnrforum douchebags are coming to get ya. Madison is a guy, Randy Lahey is a butt pirate, Gunzen is an impotent old man who has a girl’s motorcycle.Album should have came out 10 years ago.

  43. dsven  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Listen chump, I loved GnR in their heyday, saw them live numerous times, and still blast Appetite now and again.

That said, I can tell the difference between classic GnR, average GnR, and shitty Axl rose solo output. This is the latter, and if you can’t differentiate, I feel sorry for you.

    15 years for this? Meh.

  44. The words of a hipster:
“like, omg, GnR is sooo 1987. omg, im like totally just like going to listen to the new Justice remix of MGMT. thats sooo much more hip, god. Axl is just so not…I do love his tight pants though…”

  45. dsven  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

    From said mygnrforum.com

    Flood this beeyotch, indeed!

    How sad.

It’s in the top 10 news stories commented on. Any press is good press. Lets keep it going. You can post as many times as you want under various fake names and fake email addresses. We should flood this bitch with positive feedback. Bet you the hipsters come around, they are a bunch of fucking cows. They’ll simply follow the leader.

  46. Well, that was fast. I’m probably better off having missed it.

  47. Nobody Special  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Axl started work on this album in 1964??? FORTY-FOUR YEARS AGO??? I heard it was taking forever, but Jeez… No wonder it cost over 15 million dollars. I like G n’ R way back in the day, but that was back before the Internet when we had to consume only the music that the industry fed to us. I doubt I’ll listen to this, and I definately won’t buy this just like I have no interest in a new Dokken CD, that time is way past. And that’s where it belongs. I do like the cover though…

  48. Goon  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

of all bands, it sounds like Static-X to me. Could be worse.

  49. Jack Daniels  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

This song kicks a lot of ass. All the people bashing can make like the wind and blow me

  50. Gideon  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

Find yourself another, another piece, another piece of the action. You’re crazy. Hey hey. You’re fucking crazy. Oh my.

  51. Kaspar  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

They oughta just make this the official video.

  52. Tommy Stinson  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2008

Well since Stereogum thinks SR sucks, surely this means the end of GNR!CHINESE DEMOCRACY STARTS NOW!!!1111

  53. I think it’s wonderful that people are coming in here getting all uppity and personal making all sorts of judgments and letting all these insults fly at people who they feel do nothing but judge others and insult them. newsflash: You’ve become exactly what you’re “rallying” against, my friends. Fall back, be easy, re-group.

And besides calling people hipsters and spewing hateful stereotypes is not going to make this song any better. I mean, really. I’m not exactly sure what you’re trying to prove here. Everyone that doesn’t like this song must be some crazed hipster retard who would funnel Stephen Malkmus’ fecal matter into their veins if they thought it’d get their picture on Pitchfork?

Maybe people just think it’s really fucking bad song.

And I don’t know who decided that a blog had to consistently uphold a standard of thoughtful unbiased journalism. This isn’t TIME. I’ll repeat: it’s a damn blog.

  54. where’s my dr pepper?

  55. bones  |   Posted on Aug 22nd, 2008

this is officially the theme song to all my visits to the toilet.

  56. Blech. All this new GnR I’ve heard just sounds so terribly outdated. I’m just waiting for some nu-metal style tracks to leak.

I just don’t understand how anyone can defend this crap unless they’ve pledged their soul to Axl Rose.

And I’m far from a “hipster”, I just dislike shit music.

  57. i’ve always hated guns and roses.

  58. In Axl’s defense, this is probably as good as that last Smashing Pumpkins album.

  59. dingo  |   Posted on Aug 26th, 2008

Guns N Roses is only popular because of the band Mr Brownstone

  60. Listened three times. Asked three other people to listen. All agree. This is so bloated from mixing it is incomprehensible. Can barely understand a word Axl says and WHEN did his voice get so weak? The GnR’s “Axl is god” folks will love it. Most everyone else will ignore it. Axl will tour, briefly, then flip out again, cancel tour and fade away for another gazillion years to work on another “epic” album. History will repeat itself. *yawn*

  61. Not the worse song I’ve ever heard, but not the best. It definitely grows on you though. This coming from a die-hard fan, mind you. If the rest of the album end up like this song, it will be average at best. But with today’s music scene, average songs/cds seem to make plenty of money and become ridiculously popular, so who knows.

  62. Skinny Pants  |   Posted on Aug 21st, 2008

You’re right, Richard. Indie rock sucks and my life is a sham.
