We received a number of songs from the Cure’s 13th album incrementally, over so many weeks, that 4:13 Dream feels comfortably well-worn even on the first listen. The Single Of The Month Club brought us jangly, sexy “The Only One,” lame-o “Freakshow,” “Sleep When I’m Dead,” and achy “The Perfect Boy.” Then there are tracks like beautiful, compelling opener “Underneath The Stars” that found their way to our ears via different means (e.g. the band performing the entire album in Rome). The effect is strange: Familiar song, something new, familiar song, something blue. What’s even stranger: 30 years on, the Cure have cool new tricks to perform. Hear for yourself.

  1. this is their best album in 16 years. it’s not for nothing that porl’s back. robert sounds engaged again. their playing is amazing. the lyrics aren’t self-referential and obvious. it’s a great album.
