After complaining about the latest 808s leak — too brief and barely audible through LowKey’s car stereo — we received this full-length radio rip via e-mail (thanks Steven). Decent audio quality if you overlook the DJ drops. Mechanical beats and modular synths give “Anyway” that now familiar eighties vibe, with a throbbing intro that recalls Missing Persons’ “Words.” This time there’s a Kid Cudi chorus helping Kanye get his love out of lockdown. Between the paranoia and the Robocopping, this girl honestly doesn’t seem worth the drama, but Kanye is intent on making it work. No Auto-Tune on this one! (Just kidding, there is totally Auto-Tune.)

KANYE DID NOT LEAK THIS SQUID BRAINS!!

  2. bananafana feux  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2008

Yep–still blows. It sounds like a last minute soundtrack record for a Tyler Perry Christmas special.

He’s gone from a one-trick pony that was actually good, into one that just flat out sucks.

    Auto-Tune hurts my feelings.

  5. Jason  |   Posted on Nov 4th, 2008

no more auto-tune PELASE! 2nd place after love lockdown, but seriously wtf?

  6. Waaaaaayyyy better then Robocop. I could handle this.

i think people are hyping up this cd too much

Kanye, if you rapped over these tracks instead of singing, they’d be incredible. Mind-blowing. This sounds like that white guy in my dorm freshman year from Sacramento who thought he could sing R&B music. But he couldn’t! Oh, he just couldn’t.

thank you for the SQUID BRAINS!!!! reference.

wtf? you guys are all either deaf or musically impaired. this shit is dope. kanye west has once again proven his genius with this album. so its not rap? it still sounds great, and its still kanye.

    • bananafana feux  |   Posted on Nov 4th, 2008

Your last point says it all. The only reason anyone is paying these tracks any attention is because its still Kanye. And it sucks. If this were any other artist, no one would think twice about this repetitive garbage.

Fifty sayin he’s makin babies to this.
    You win Kanye, you win!

This is the best track thus far. I’m worried about the thing as a whole but everything works here.

  15. I’m really excited for this album.

Basically, what he said about Love Lockdown applies to the whole experience: “Sometimes you just gotta follow your heart” or something to that effect. And I think it’s very admirable that Kanye is willing to put himself out there like this. Yeah, it’s off the rails, it’s risky as fuck, but I’d rather this than another Graduation.

And another great thing, is it’s Kanye traveling to the edge of artiness, but bringing it back with shit like “WHY YOU ACTIN LIKE A ROBOCOP?” It’s clunky, but I find it endearing (though I definitely see why people wouldn’t), like a lot of Kanye’s shit. But at least we know Rhymefest isn’t ghostwriting his shit anymore.

Basically, whether it’s an album I want to listen to all the time or not, I think that as a piece of art, as a statement, 808s & Heartbreak should be respected, because it takes serious guts to do something like this, and with full conviction. That’s why it keeps getting reported on.

It’s the integrity and true adventurousness of it all. Btw, I <3 Love Lockdown, Coldwest Winter, and Robocop put a smile on my face. Haven’t heard this yet (I’m at schoooool).

  16. Really? Another one?

  17. nekruj  |   Posted on Nov 5th, 2008

So. This is only interesting music because of it’s creator. It’s kind of fascinating, actually, because yeah- it’s not too far off from some college kid’s demo. I absolutely cannot wait for this record to come out.

I hate Auto-tune. Please end it in the hip-hop world. I love Kanye but auto-tune is just awful and now completely stereotypical of hip-hop music.

  19. Holy shit this song is bananas. Should definitely be the next single.

  20. Justin  |   Posted on Nov 5th, 2008

i actually think kanye is on some hot shit with his new style, and he has a tendency to drop shit that later becomes the dominant style of the game… so consider me a fan, even if this new one is a little too straightforward with its melody

  21. I’m a *huge* ass fan of kanye, but this singing has to stop… If he rapped over the chorus of these songs… Man, they’d be 100%.

  22. gaby  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2008

am i the only one like ridiculously disappointed by his new music? every single he releases bores.me.to.death.

  23. Jake  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2008

    Extrava-gangsta-radiooooooooooo

God I wish there was a better version of this song.

  24. Andrew  |   Posted on Nov 6th, 2008

This is the first 808′s song I’m actually digging. Wish he could go back and redo the rest of them now.

  25. “Modular” synths? Probably not. You have to be smart to use those properly. I’m going with Korg Triton.

But thank god for the Autotune. I wouldn’t have recognized this as Kanye without it.

  26. patentbox  |   Posted on Nov 8th, 2008

kinda disappointed in the earlier tracks, but i actually like this one quite a bit

  27. I know that not many will agree on this point, but I think this will be a fun album. I am kind of looking forward to it.

  28. robocop  |   Posted on Nov 10th, 2008

i think this shit is dope as with all the others/ not a real fan of his rhymes i just thought he was catchy so this works for me,ill save the real hiphop for the real emcees, all these songs would be cooler with a better vocalist though, like if he got justin timberlake to sing all these songs, theyd be way better

  29. jason  |   Posted on Nov 10th, 2008

why cant he just have fun and self indulge a little bit, he doesnt owe any of you anything, this condemning kanye must stop lol, i dont like him even but he has right to explore whatever, none of these songs have been bad, they’re just lighthearted pop songs, very catchy ones, if some electro-pop band called like crystal something released these songs you would all love them…

  30. The comments saying this song would not matter if it wasn’t by Kanye are absolutely correct. It’s not groundbreaking in any way, it’s not exciting and listening to auto-tune does nothing but remind me of Cher. Anyone who thinks this is art or taking a chance is crazy.

  31. REALIST  |   Posted on Nov 23rd, 2008

Come off it – only I die hard Kanye fan could like this poorly produced and frankly weird effort. And for those who challenge back saying just because it is not hip-hop does not mean it is not a good sound are crazy. I like a lot of different types of music and I find this hard to place – the closest thing I have heard to this is something Cher did in the 90′s. This reminds me of when the RZA made the bobby digital album of the back end os a load of success as this was just as bad. Some artists get so full of themselves that they think anything they make is art or a new direction. this thinking is flawed and arrogant. Kanye go back to what you do best and get real to all those who think this is work is quote ‘genius’, it is lazy and ill-defined.
