The New Yorker visits the Purple One in his home to talk about stuff. Prop 8 and Roe v. Wade came up. We sorta wish they didn’t: “When asked about his perspective on social issues–gay marriage, abortion–Prince tapped his Bible and said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’” (UPDATE: Mr. Prince says he was misquoted. New Yorker stands by its story.)

He may have pointed to his Bible, but apparently hasn’t studied it. The old testament has loads of insightful and moving stories of peoples of long ago. There are many lessons to be learned, divine lessons. But if you have taken any type of College historal Bible classes, you would understand that it was a completely different culture, mostly nomadic. In a harsh nomadic life, yes it was probably best to stick to a nuclear family format. But as for today, not so much. Prince, the year is 2008.

      Dear Prince,

I am going to assume you were talking about Jesus when you said “God came down to Earth..”. So just follow up by telling us the part of the new testament where Jesus talks about gay people. Because I just can’t seem to find that part.

      Thanks.

  7. i was going to do a cover version of his gay marriage views, but his lawyers sent me a cease and desist letter.

  8. *rimshot*

  9. He may have pointed to his Bible, but apparently…

  10. Pointing to the Bible with the same hand you’ve been pointing to your dilznick with for 30 years as a musician smacks of irony and hypocrisy. But that closing paragraph where he talks about the stalker, see that’s the real shit.

Prince has been doing the same thing effectively since he started in the music industry: keeping people guessing. We can call him crazy or whatever else, but he’s playing some chess that we can’t even understand. He’s already got us checkmated, we just don’t know it yet.

  11. What a hypocrite, did you ever see his shows a few years ago? All the lesbian innuendos between Lisa and Wendy?Aww, Prince, you were my macho icon (all three feet of your high heeled purpleness).

  12. Yeah, well, these days Prince is an 1850 player at best. All you need to beat him is a strong center position with a dark square fianchetto.

  13. Anybody that can shoot wad out of the head of their guitar onto the faces of their fans and then chastise pre-flood gays and practitioners of bestiality has my vote for “world’s most gigantic balls.” I tip my hat…

  14. Just checked – “Purple Rain” is still great. Whew.

OH MY GOD!!! SOMEONE HAS A DIFFERENT VIEW THAN ME?! HELLLLLL NO! I MUST JUDGE THEM IMMEDIATELY!

    • He built his entire career around questioning the macho dickbaggery of the world around him and directly explored androgyny. Along with millions of other people around the world, I paid a lot of hard-earned money to subscribe to Prince’s musical world views over the years. If there’s a valid reason for me to feel cheated, you’d better believe I want to know about it.

On repeated readings, I don’t see him as haven really taken a position about the whole thing. He places all the hard work on his interpretation of God without judging anyone.

    • Evan  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2008

Well, when it involvs being a bigot, YES. Fuck Prince.

What gives ANY OF US the right to deprive ANYONE of happiness and love? And the CHANCE at a successful marriage?

It’s funny how everyone talks about how far we’ve come to elect Obama, yet California turns a blind eye to the gay and lesbian community.

Thus spake the the man with the asless chaps.

  17. Of course, he goes to Perez Hilton to make it clear that he was ‘misquoted’ and is ‘very angry’. I would be, too. Link sanitized for anyone who won’t click for Perez:

Milissa, it really depends on who teaches these college bible classes; more conservative biblical scholars have a vastly different understanding of the meaning of Old Testament law than the more liberal ones of say, the Jesus Seminar.
But even so, homosexual sex is something that is objectively immoral regardless of biblical authority– the message on homosexual sex in both the OT and NT doesn’t deserve debate; in fact, Paul warned against those who would try to justify this kind of behavior with misguided psuedo-intellectualism (in the name of ‘liberty’ or equality) Anyway, homosexual sex isn’t any more disgusting than random heterosexual hookups– what bothers Christians is that homosexuals are not only defending and taking pride in their actions, but demanding that the government recognize it. Personally, I wish the government had nothing to do with marriage so we didn’t have to have these kind of arguments and we could get on loving and helping one another. This is a major distraction that unfortunately has to be dealt with if we are to preserve the integrity of the law.

    • hey Chase, Ever heard of LOVE?! get your mind out of the gutter. it’s not all about sex. it’s about companionship and sharing your life with the person you love. i can’t think of anything more un-christian than trying to take that away from someone

  19. Greg  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2008

All this coming from a guy who wrote a song called Erotic City.

    • It’s been cleared up. More to the point, in the song “Controversy”, he sings the question, “I don’t understand/All the things people say/Controversy/Am I black or white/Am I straight or gay/Controversy”. A guy who sang those words, I’m willing to believe was misquoted.

  20. chase  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2008

    Hey Jim,
There’s nothing wrong with men loving each other, which is why I specified that I was only talking about homosexual sex acts, not homosexual love. If sex and love are inseparable to you, then that’s a whole other issue. To me, sexuality is a unique expression of love that exists within a marriage– when outside of a marriage, I have a very difficult time believing it to be an expression of love.
Something may feel nice to people, fill them with warm feelings, make them happy, and help them live a more ‘fulfilled life’ but these are not necessarily qualities of love. My understanding of love is derived from God’s character, not from old Hollywood movies , Rachel and Ross, or love songs. These things reflect certain aspects of God’s love, and to that degree they are beautiful, but that does not mean they are complete.
It seems like it would be nice if love was merely making each other feel good, or helping each other out, everybody getting along, etc, but that simply isn’t the case and for me to forgo my rationality just because something’feels’ right or makes some group of people feel good would be immoral; after all, isn’t that the kind of behavior that leads to intolerance and hatred?

  21. I was reminded that Prince also wrote, performed and sang the song “If I Was Your Girlfriend”.

He gets plenty of slack from me.

  22. JWs don’t even believe in giving their own dying children blood transfusions when needed, so this story isn’t exactly surprising.

wow i LOL’D at that. I’ve actually been to that house and seen how disgustingly lavish it is with the prince logos everywhere so i don’t have much problem believing this interview.

  24. Um. I defended you and your sexual orientation every time my friend’s watched you prance around in your high heels and thong underwear. I get no love in return? Here’s my letter to Prince

wow. some of these comments are fucking scary.

  28. Kelly  |   Posted on Nov 19th, 2008

The bottom line is that most Christians interpret the Bible as saying that homosexuality is a sin, but that only applies to Christians. Those who aren’t Christians, according to Christian theology, must first accept Christ before worrying about any sins, sexual or otherwise.

But as to bigotry, it’s a little disingenuous when people only speak of including homosexual marriages. What about all the other groups that are discriminated against in regards to marriage? If marriage is a right, then how can we as a society deny that right to any one who wants to marry the person(s) of their own choosing?

Accepting one taboo doesn’t automatically make you free of prejudice against all others.

  29. I remember being 16 and arguing in the library for fifteen minutes with this guy I knew about whether or not Prince was gay. Where I’m from you can pretty much call somebody “gay” if they dress oddly or in too many colors. Call it the red state blues. So I finally convinced him that he had probably spent the past twenty years getting it on with many women. Now I don’t know what to think about this guy.

  30. dude bro  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2008

Why’s anyone surprised. Dude’s a born again christian. or jehova’s witness. one of those. you know like michael jackson.

  31. Santiago  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2008

This is only shocking because for years we all thought Prince was completely gay.

  32. St. Nico  |   Posted on Nov 20th, 2008

  34. The Bible is a boring fairytale, but you don’t have to be religious to not be in favor of gay marriage.

I don’t think the gay community does itself any favors by the way it presents itself.

I know several gay people who aren’t in favor of homosexuals being allowed to adopt children or partake in the family system.
