just because something was laboured on for 17 years quite clearly doesn’t make it any good. Besides, what MIGHT have been “groundbreaking” 17 years ago sure as hell isnt now. Epic fail
what a bunch of buzzkills, what have you douches ever done that was substantial? the album sounds epic and grandiose to me, and that’s a good thing, especially in this age of throwaway mediocre albums by the constant spew of pitchfork approved bands out there that can only pose and pretend

If you’re over 30 and didn’t wear all-stars in high school, you will get a kick out of four or five of the songs. It sounds dated — and GNR should sound dated. It could have been a lot worse. And if you don’t believe that you can hang yourself with your white belt.

I was expecting to hate this. The first half of the album is pretty good. It’ll grow on me probably. Sonically it’s very interesting. Sometimes good-interesting. Sometimes bad-interesting. Still waiting for the reunion though.
Agreed. I was fully expecting this to be a trainwreck. Listened to it a few times on a long drive yesterday, and I was actually pleasantly surprised.
A classic? Worth 17 years of waiting? Not even close. But a surprisingly decent album for existing fans.

I think the audience for GnR and Bloc Party don’t have much overlap anyway.

this album (from what i can tell via the streams) isn’t terrible. it isn’t brilliant. it just sort of is. i used to dig guns n roses, and appetite is and always will be a kick ass piece of music. but i don’t see myself ever listening to this new stuff. if someone gives me a copy, i’ll put it on my shelf, but i’ll probably never take it out again.

Gotta admit it’s not as much of a train wreck as I thought it’d be. I’d say it’s half-decent if too long, after the sixth or seventh song I was like: when will it be over?!
I had forgotten how piercing Axl Rose can be!
The biggest failure, to my naked and totally premature listening, were the ballads. They could/will never live up to November Rain.
Obviously, no album can live up to being over 10 years “in the making”. It’s not a massive oil painting, you know?
You all are being too nice. I gave it a listen, well…, as much as I could stomach. It simply sucks! And, no, I’m not saying this as an indi music snob, b/c I’ll give all music a chance, but this album has no redeeming qualities.
Now I do still think Axel has a decent voice with some range, but he needs to be singing some rock-n-roll, and Chinese Democracy rocks in all the wrong ways. At least we still have Appetite for Destruction.
