A.C. Newman is about to release his second solo album Get Guilty, which means it’s just about time for fellow multi-tasking New Pornographer Neko Case to (try to) show (him) up with her own extracurricular record. Middle Cyclone is her first collection of new material in three years (following 2006′s Fox Confessor Brings The Flood). She recorded the 15 songs — originals plus covers of Sparks’ “Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth” and “Don’t Forget Me” by Harry Nilsson (which we witnessed live with some other new tracks) — in Tucson, Brooklyn, Toronto, and Vermont. The instrumentation is Case backed by a five-piece band plus guest spots by M. Ward, Sarah Harmer, Garth Hudson and members of Los Lobos, Calexico, Lilys, Giant Sand, New Pornos, the Sadies, etc. The album cover, though, is Case by her lonesome, surfing her muscle car.

The tracks:

01 “This Tornado Loves You”
02 “The Next Time You Say Forever”
03 “People Got A Lotta Nerve”
04 “Polar Nettles”
05 “Vengeance Is Sleeping”
06 “Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth”
07 “Middle Cyclone”
08 “Fever”
09 “Magpie To The Morning”
10 “I’m An Animal”
11 “Prison Girls”
12 “Don’t Forget Me”
13 “The Pharaohs”
14 “Red Tide”
15 “Marais La Nuit”

Middle Cyclone is out 3/3 via Anti-.

  1. I used to be all “How could Neko Case be any cooler or gorgeous?”

But then she wielded a fucking sword from the hood of a car.

That Mercury Cougar only wishes it was powered by “Neko”. “Whatever with you’re whatever”, if you’re a Death Proof fan. She’s officially the hottest chick on four Bridgestones! vroooom, vroooom…..

It’s good to hear a progress report on this record. The songs she and her band played on tour last summer made me all the more impatient waiting for this new release.

Really? That’s the cover? And people like that cover?

Don’t get me wrong, I love her music, and I’m really looking forward to hearing this album, and there’s no denying that those legs are smoking… but surely this is an ill-conceived photoshop nightmare?

So the song “People Got a Lotta Nerve” is about Neko being a maneater. She goes after younger guys. It’s only proper that she’s atop a Mercury Cougar, sword in hand in the photo. Get it? Cougar?

Nice shot of Neko, but that is a 1967 Mercury Cougar, and not a Mercury Cyclone that she is kneeling on!
Here is a 1967 Mercury Cyclone:

  14. yup. it’s a cougar, not a cyclone. maybe that’s the art of the cover?
