Cold Cave is the brainchild of Philadelphia’s Wesley Eisold, ex-Some Girls, Give Up The Ghost, XO Skeletons, and currently Ye Olde Maids, etc. We’re calling his newest project a Band To Watch, but Eisold received some high-profile press when Fall Out Boy reportedly plagiarized lyrics from his influential hardcore outfit Give Up The Ghost. He won an out-of-court settlement, is now credited in the liner notes of From Under The Cork Tree and Infinity On High. Eisold’s hardcore/punk background rears its head in interesting ways in Ye Olde Maids, but more especially in Cold Cave, a darkwave synth confection with more than enough static and noise cycling through to justify mentions of Prurient and Burning Star Core on his personal MySpace. The songs are danceable, dark, instantly infectious. Think ’80s industrial and synth pop over-driven through power electronics. For instance, take a listen to “Sex Ads,” which comes from Painted Nails, a three-song 7″ released by Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions.

The 7″ is limited to 500 copies via Hospital. Eisold also co-runs Heartworm Press with Max G. Morton. They put out the first Cold Cave release Coma Potion and more recently a great book of collages by Youth Attack records head Mark McCoy, which is opening up as a show in Philadelphia this Friday at Eisold’s new art space Juanita & Juan’s.

You can catch Cold Cave live this Sunday (12/7) at Bowery Ballroom with Love is All and Crystal Stilts. Hear more at MySpace. Pay attention to “The Trees Grew Emotions And Died,” which comes from the Dais 12″ of the same name.

I’m glad that blogs are finally paying attention to Wes & his bands.

  2. microKORGs are played out  |   Posted on Dec 3rd, 2008

A mini-keyboard front line? I don’t even need to hear this band to know they suck.

  3. no offense to this band – i’m sure they’re nice dudes, but that MP3 sounds like my xbox ate my wii and then barfed it up on my ipod. i think i might hemorrhage from my brain from all the hipsters and blipsters that probably frequent their live shows.

What the fuck was that? Seriously what the fuck

  5. buck crowell  |   Posted on Dec 3rd, 2008

Terrible…there are way too many bands that play this shit…

  6. John Claude  |   Posted on Dec 3rd, 2008

    Yep. Just awful. Sorry kids.

  7. Sounds like they discovered a distortion pedal and ran with it.

  9. I liked it.

  10. Im all for new music but this can’t be for real right? surely and mp3 encoding error?

We’re Down Till We’re Underground is the best hardcore cd ever. Fuck anyone who disses this.

  13. Wow, these guys blow…. Hate to say it. I mean I appreciate Stereogum promoting bands that don’t get covered much, but there is an element of taste and selectivity that is important with such things… Seriously, these guys lack talent in a big way and there are others who deserve the spotlight on them way more than these dudes…

Personally, I think Cataldo’s 2008 album is fucking amazing, beautiful music and has gotten no love on the blogosphere.. You can stream it here: http://www.cataldomusic.com/ and I strongly recommend you do.

Also, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head! I emailed Stereogum about them because they are awesome… They opened for CSS’ North American tour this year and are still not getting any attention whatsoever, except a little in the Seattle press: http://www.myspace.com/natalieportmansshavedhead “Ice Age Babeland” is particularly kick ass.

Don’t perceive this as spam… Not a spammer… as you can see from other posts. Just thought you all ought to be updated on some “Bands to Watch” that are actually enjoyable to listen to, the kind of stuff that deserves recognition.

  14. get fuckt yall  |   Posted on Dec 9th, 2008

how come all the commenters have such fucking boring and bland taste here? oh, right, im on stereogum.com

  15. Fred  |   Posted on Dec 9th, 2008

I thought everyone was just been mean or whatever, but they really exaggerated on the distortion.

  16. Michael Rice  |   Posted on Dec 9th, 2008

What has three heads, five hands and sucks?

    That was mean, sorry.

  20. cold plave  |   Posted on Jan 9th, 2009

and by “where it’s at”, you mean where brown metabolic waste gets pushed out, right? this band is certainly one to watch…if you like watching three guys blow.
Says something about this blog’s ability to forecast good music…

  21. spencer2  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009

The song on the main page might be the best song I’ve ever heard. Holy fuck…this is so good, and from the genius that fronted American Nightmare.

    kiss kiss keep kissing.

pretty amped to see them at No Fun Fest. they’re not the greatest but the music is definitely entertaining. like a darker VCR

  23. pete major  |   Posted on Nov 5th, 2009

I saw these guys play at fuck yeah fest. Wow! these guys have NO stage presence! I was really into them too. I found out Wesley used to hang out with the guys from Fallout Boy and sued them for plaguerizing one of his songs. Its funny how much his new song sounds like Q Lazzarus. Rip Off!
