I’m not a Nine Inch Nails fan but it seems like Trent Reznor is a pretty decent guy.
I neither like nor dislike Trent Reznor’s music. But loudmouth detractors should take note of this non-fiction tale:
I used to know a woman who was mad about Nine Inch Nails. She dragged me out to see them in 1990 when they opened for Peter Murphy at the Keswick Theatre in Glenside PA; then again when The NIN headlined a show at the infamous City Gardens in Trenton, NJ.
Months went by and one day she sows me a handwritten letter she received from Mr. Reznor. Turns out she wrote him a letter, asking him to be her date to her senior high school prom. He wrote a very sweet and sincere letter, saying he was dumbfounded and flattered beyond words by her gesture, but that he was busy with business and touring obligations and wouldn’t be able to join her. His words were gracious. And while, I wasn’t into his music then (or now), I thought to myself, “That’s fucking cool. What a decent guy.”
Here we are 19 years later and he’s treating his fans with loyalty, respect and gratitude with free downloads and the like.
Prince could learn a thing or two from such non-alienating gestures when he’s not proselytizing Jehovah’s Witness nonsense or suing his longtime fans for sharing unreleased live recordings.
I think every corner of the music business could learn from this guy.
Trent Reznor is immune to the downfall of the record industry because he embraces ideas like this. He gives his record away for free and he still gets the top selling download on Amazon for 2008. He trusts his audience and they’ll go with him as far as he wants to go.
for real. Trent has rebounded in a major way since last year. this is less a matter of “letting fans do his tech work for him,” moron.
he gave 400 gb of video to us for free, for some talented people to make into something, which will no doubt be available somewhere online in the future. that’s amazingly cool.
a friend of mine has started the download, and he says it looks like footage they had filmed for what was to be the live DVD, but they couldn’t go through cuz the old label wouldn’t grant him the rights to the old songs.

i agree with Matt — every corner of the music industry should learn from this guy. but it helps that’s he’s already cultivated his following. but he’s massively revolutionized the business, even if at this point, it seems to be just for himself.
