coachella09-rumors.jpg

Today the hot buzz around the watercooler in the office that none of us are at is all about Coachella ’09! Not the fake lineup, but the real lineup. Because LAist.com said that consequenceofsound.com said that there are a bunch of confirmed artists. If you are confused about what it means to be confirmed, basically an artist is confirmed once a website says they are confirmed, that’s how confirmations work you can look it up. OK now I’ll be fair: apparently the confirmation list includes bands that have been contacted individually and have said they’ll be there. Coachella.com is mum on the subject, but let’s look at the list as it is being posted around, and then we can talk about the other artists we’d like to say are confirmed when we’re ready:

“CONFIRMED”:
The Airborne Toxic Event
The Bug
Buraka Son Sistema
Crystal Castles
Drop The Lime
Fleet Foxes
Flying Lotus
Girl Talk
The Hold Steady
The Killers
No Age
Noah And The Whale
Late Of The Pier
Los Campesinos!
Peanut Butter Wolf
The Presets
Sébastian Tellier
Themselves
Tinariwen

And now for something a little more speculative, here’s the internet-sanctioned list of rumored artists.

Animal Collective
Basement Jaxx
The Black Keys
Black Lips
Blur
Britney Spears
The Comedians of Comedy
Four Tet
The Gaslight Anthem
Glasvegas
Gui Boratto
Gus Black
Heartless Bastards
Hot Little Pony
José González
Keane
KONGCRETE
Mexican Institute of Sound
Monotonix
Morrissey
Mr. Lif
N.A.S.A.
Neil Young
OutKast
Plump DJs
The Pretenders
The Prodigy
The Replacements
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Roni Size Reprazent
The Smiths
The Thermals
Turbonegro
We Are Scientists
White Lies
The White Stripes

Not bad, internet, not bad. But as always: needs more Pavement.

One thing that is fair and true: Coachella dates have been bumped up a week this year, spanning Friday 4/17 to Sunday 4/19. No ticket info yet.

    PAVEMENT!!!!!!

  2. Err, The Smiths? Am I missing something here?

  3. SEBADOH!!!!!

  4. Supposedly the Killers might be one of the headliners (according to the official Coachella forum people). So all you indie snobs out there get yourselves prepared right now in order to avoid a heart attack or something on announcement day.

  5. that coachella message board is nuts. there’s people who spend more time there in any three day period than they do at the actual festival. and for all the thousands of posts leading up to last year’s lineup announcement no one predicted JJ, Prince and Waters.

Bloc Party will be there . . .

They’re friends of mine and have already mentioned it to me.

Animal Collective is a sure thing as well….

That’s all I know for now

  7. We need justice back in there. they rocked in 07′ and i think 09′ should be their year again.

  8. Great, Now Sterogum is caught up in all of the Coachella message board mess. Speculating is fun, whats going on over on the Coachella message board is a catastrophe. A couple of my fake posts have made it on to all of this lists and they site me as a point of confirmation. I made it up, as I thought many others on that board are doing.

  9. The Smiths? I also heard The Beatles were gonna play too.

  10. eric  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2009

    animal collective and britney spears

  11. zie3  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2009

i heard from a friend whose brother was friends with the uncle of the original engineer for the rolling stones that they’re going to use voodoo to bring mick jagger back from the dead and have the stones play at coachella and everyone gets free ice cream from 31 flavors.

  12. contest to go to coachella?

  13. madonna  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2009

    where is Fleetwood Mac??

  14. grover  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2009

wouldn’t be giant music festival speculation without a smiths reunion now would it

  15. Sadly, from both of these lists, I just don’t see the possibility of a live Lil’ Wayne on-stage collab. Maybe next year.

I can’t wait to see what the S-Gum forum posters have up their bearded flannel sleeves for when the Killers are announced as headliners. Line-O-Rama anyone?

Oh, and because of the peer pressure – LED ZEPPELIN!!1!

  16. Little Joy please!

  17. i need to see damon albarn before i die.

  18. Are you 4 years old? Did you miss them since 1991?

  19. sonokrug  |   Posted on Jan 12th, 2009

daft punk, david bowie, talking heads.

no worries, i wrote a letter to santa about those three as headliners, and when there was nothing under my tree this christmas, did i blame the economy? yes, but i also think kris kringle might have postponed his delivery for april.

  20. Is it worse when a blog uses a Friends reference in a post title, or when a reader recognizes it as such?

    Woe is me!

  21. mostly gross with a side of pass, thanks.

  22. yeah  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

    Needs more Grizzly Bear.

  23. yay!  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

black moth super rainbow, bon iver, santogold and built to spill please!

  24. Turbonegro in the desert playing to a bunch of indie rockers, industry folks, and people that missed burning man. sounds perfect.

willing to bet the gaslight anthem play this too.

  25. The Smiths and Britney Spears.

    Also: Jimi Hendrix and Duffy.

  26. Heather  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

Why is no one cracking major jokes about Brittney Spears? I mean, I can’t do it because I’m not funny, but there’s got to be someone out there who can come up with something. It needs to be done.

  27. Manny  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

You forgot Amanda Palmer, i was told she would be there!

  28. Ryan  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

If irony is still the cool thing to be in to, then Briney Spears set at Coachella will be absolutely packed. Unless of course she’s playing the same time as Fleet Foxes…

  29. billybass  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

I am hoping for Pavement but I think they are going to wait until terror twilight is reissued. I would spend my stimulus check on a Pavement reunion!!!

  30. Ozzy   |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

I HOPE THE WHITE LIES ARE THERE. THEY ARE GANGSTA!

  31. rima  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

  33. Radio Zero  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

REO Speedwagon will headline Day 3 of the festival…this has just been confirmed!!

  34. Dawg  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

    Wings, please!

  35. Anon  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

Ike and Tina reunion show at Coachella 2009

  36. Aren’t the red hot chili peppers on hiatus? And I could have sworn Roni Size was no longer playing with reprazent. This list makes 0 sense.

  37. Britney is to Coachella was Antony is to Wango Tango

  38. Willie Maykit  |   Posted on Jan 13th, 2009

Can! they could play the entirety of Tago Mago…let’s all beg Damo Suzuki

  39. ughhh, ONE day i will go to this!

  40. Srsly, can we get some kinda source on The Smiths? Or did you just type that when you meant Pavement(!)?

  41. CONTEST!!!!!!!!!

they’ll be sure to hit the polo fields

  43. I hope Gary Young is there…with cabbage.

  44. Dennis  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009

The Smiths will never ever reform – haven’t any of you guys read the countless interviews done with individual members of the band.
More likely that Morrissey will play and incorporate a few Smiths songs into his set.

  45. zeke  |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2009

Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective would make the festival for me. And portishead AGAIN

  46. no one WANTED to predict jack johnson would be there. ugh.

  51. J. Crane  |   Posted on Jan 17th, 2009

U2 anyone? Or are they too fancy to share a weekend with other musicians?

And the Black Keys are confirmed, along with the White Stripes. Coachella meets its affirmative-action-mandated blues duo quota.

  52. crystal castles sucks the big one live.

  53. Credible Source  |   Posted on Jan 19th, 2009

I’m a personal friend of Stravinsky and he told me that he’s definitely confirmed to conduct the 1960 Columbia Symphony Orchestra. I?m 750% sure that they?re going to do the Rite of Spring and they might do the Firebird Suite. It depends on how long Bach?s performance is going to run. Oh? and, by the by, some of you people are retarded, so you might want to have that checked out.

  54. Yeah I heard John Cage was gonna conduct 4’33”

  55. the iS  |   Posted on Jan 20th, 2009

  59. PopulationControl  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2009

They just announced the lineup…Friday is Deicide, Saturday is Menudo, Sunday is the Fat Boys.

  60. lineup will be announced tomorrow morning at 7:20 am on the crappy LA radio station known as KROQ. So Stereogum and P4K will have it posted at 7:21. Pacific Standard Time, of course.

  61. what’s up with the lineup announcement?!

  62. Sure bet that The Preset will be there…yes! cuz they are awesome
