Just before the new year we pointed you over to the new Elvis Perkins In Dearland site, where the fuss-worthy folkie and Class of ’06 BTW threw up a few streaming tunes from the forthcoming self-titled long-player. One of those cuts was the heavy-hitting, swinging/stomping “Shampoo,” which I’d put next to “While You Were Sleeping” as a trademark tune, in Perkins’s setlists since I’ve been tracking his live shows but only now getting its long overdue studio treatment. Wurlitzer and acoustic, harmonica and harmonies flesh out allusions to John Jacob Niles (“Black is the color of a strangled rainbow / That’s the color of my lung / Black is the color of my true love’s arrow / That’s the color of human blood”) which Elvis delivers with a signature mix of breezy melody and nostalgic desperation. Point being, you should have this MP3:

  4. This is really good. The first time I saw or heard Elvis Perkins in Dearland was opening for Clap Your Hands in Orlando…one of the most pleasant musical surprises at a show ever – been hooked ever since and it sounds like he’s on top form once again.

  5. Wow, fantastic! I’m really looking forward to the new LP, his debut was superb.
