It’s the highest volume music store in the country and makes roughly $6MM in profit annually, but who cares about that, what this city really needs is another Forever 21! And so it will be: In April the Times Square Virgin Megastore will close, and from its dust will rise a discount department store. Sad. Meanwhile the Union Square location is not being closed! (Yet). More info for you to read and weep at Billboard.biz.

It’s kind of curious that you guys made the same mistake (Century 21 instead of Forever 21) that Idolator made. Not sure what to make of that. Do they not have Forever 21 locations in NYC?

So what? A “megastore”? All it does is sell more of what everybody else is selling than anybody else does. What kind of an idiot could possibly care? What is being lost here that’s of any imaginable value or interest to anybody but major label execs and tween-age girls?

If anything, this will have some small positive effect on sales for independent record stores — but in a market the size of NYC, it’ll be lost in the noise.

Yeah, nevermind the fact that Virgin has far and away the best dvd selection of any store in New York. I’m sure Century 21 or Forever 21 or whateverthefuck will add much more culture to the city.

  4. Who buys their music and movies from an overpriced store when you have access to amazon.com?

I’m suprised the space won’t be leased to another oversized theme family restaurant. We could use an IHOP.

  5. teehee. i’ve shoplifted hard to find CDs from here.

First the megastores forced the independents to close their doors, now the megastores are starting to close… Yes, Amazon is cheaper, but some of us like to go to a store and browse… Call me an old fart.

  9. the one in Chicago is a michigan avenue now.

when’s the last time anyone who is reading this- went in there an
bought music? That’s why it’s closing.

  11. readthearticleplz  |   Posted on Jan 14th, 2009

it actually makes plenty of money. They are closing it because they can make more a year by leasing the space to Forever 21.

  12. Huh?  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009

readthearticleplz – good point- I read it. And I sit corrected. kind of. My question still stands, but I digress- the P&L sheet reflected impending doom – better to close now, then bleed out – the rest will follow – you’ll see.

Now on to more important issues – Cardinals or Eagles? I really dig Larry Fitzgerald- good attitude there.

I’ll miss this store. I often stop in at least weekly to browse or buy. It doesn’t sell “more of what everyone else sells.” You can literally find almost anything there. Incredible jazz selection, much of which can be had for between $7 and $10. In fact, while i am very, very loath to spend more than $10 on a single album, i could always find stuff i was willing to buy here. Yes, the are the epitome of a huge corporation, but they were not slave to the $15 – $18 price point of some of the other chain retailers. And yeah, there is a lot to be said for being able to go somewhere and browse, for more than 15 minutes. Definitely a loss, but, looking forward to the liquidation sale.

  14. People don’t realize that Virgin Megastores ARE independent stores – it’s 6 stores in the whole country not relient on a major corporation…as Branson sold the stores quite a few years ago now. Virgin Entertainment Group operates ONLY the Virgin Megastores. There is not major corporation. What are you idiots talking about.

@M, I stand corrected. wish i had realized that sooner, not that it ever prevented me from shopping at the store.
