Project Jenny, Project Jan are a Brooklyn duo. Neither are named Jenny. Or Jan. It’s been a few years since I’ve seen them live, but their vibe then was decidedly electro karaoke: programmer Sammy Rubin concocting laptop beats, vocalist Jeremy Haines dressed like an art school dandy and making full use of the unoccupied stage space and his music theater-ready pipes. Their tunes were filled with puns and punchlines, but they weren’t (necessarily) a joke; you got the sense that they were a set of serious lyrics away from breaking out of the houseparty circuit. With last year’s OST placement and screentime in Nick & Norah’s Infinite Indie Rock Song Placement, they’d officially graduated from LES obscurity and goofy tunes about the Chinatown Bus, poised for a project like the forthcoming collab EP The Colors. The five-song set sees the pair pull in Mixel Pixel, So Percussion, Adam Matta, and hushed British kraut-lovers/tourmates Fujiya & Miyagi. “Pins And Needles” opens in F&M’s mode of choice, whispered staccato lines and lockstep bass and tremolo-bar guitars, later lacing in PJPJ’s open-throated digital disco. Oh and glockenspiel, there’s glockenspiel too.
You can see PJPJ and F&M do that one live at a number of dates on the Project tour:
