You Doves fans are a fickle bunch: For months folks were pining to get even a bit of LP4 news, but when we showed up with “Jetstream” and a Kingdom Of Rust Progress Report, they were met with less-than stoked sentiments: “The problem with the Doves is that their albums are getting progressively worse,” etc. Well, it’s hard to talk shit about a man grieving — especially when he has a smart haircut — so let’s see what you make of the China Moo Young-directed video for Kingdom‘s title track, a song Jimi Goodwin once described as “wistful … quite emotional.”

It wasn’t too long ago DM Stith took us to the water to get rid of something.

Kingdom Of Rust is out 4/6 in the UK and 4/7 in the US via Heavenly/Astralwerks.

  1. Digging the song. You see, there are some Doves fans excited for their new work!

Poor guy with the “smart haircut”, I thought he was going to jump. And I was like: don’t jump dude!!!

  2. Good song. Doves are two-for-two on the new album.

thank you stereogum for addressing this fine point! wtf was up with the comment stream on that last progress report? two-for-two indeed. this band is so underappreciated.

    • “Jetstream” is subpar by Doves standards.. this is much better.

As long as “Jetstream” is the only track with the weird as fuck singer wailing, I may purchase my fourth Doves album.

  4. Wow! Welcome back Doves. Great song. Can’t wait for the full album. Classy video too. Nothing cutting edge but it suits the song.

The video is lovely and the song fits perfectly! i do agree with the comment that doves albums are getting worse, but every album they’ve produced has at least 2 good songs on it…

    eye heart doves.

There’s no way they can top the magic of The Man Who Told Everything so everyone should stop expecting them to.

This sounds great though. It’s is at least as good as the recent Morrisey drivel that everyone’s fawning over and probably lots better.

  7. Like it.

The “took us to the water” link is not working…

  8. Sorry for being honest about my opinion. I wasn’t trying to be snarky. I really like a lot of what the Doves have released and have seen them live several times. Moreover, I intend to purchase the next cd.

However, I think the songs on their albums are inconsistent. They remind me of The Smitherines in the sense that some of their songs are epic and others are forgetable.

I am totally feeling this and was a huge fan of Some Cities.

  10. Mike  |   Posted on Feb 12th, 2009

I love all of their albums. Some Cities was sublime, and I couldn’t be more excited about the new one. Welcome back, Doves.

  11. chris  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

    Yay! Doves are the best!

  12. Saul  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

I wish they would do more songs like “New York”.

  13. Each Doves album has surpassed the last. Well, not quite. Some Cities is on par with The Last Broadcast, as that was a 5-star album. People say they’ve worsened only because they’re expecting part two of Lost Souls, which will never happen. That is a magnificent debut, but is fans are somewhat overenthusiastic with its praise, period. And Flargimmer is wrong about “Jetstream,” It’s not Doves’ fault they don’t write catchy sing-a-long jingles every time with each track they produce. If you don’t like your music challenging and cerebral, then turn on the radio, that simple.

I don’t know what people are whingeing about. I have yet to run across a Doves song that I though was awful, and am insanely excited by the upcoming album. Would much rather listen to their “worst” song any day (though I’d be hard up to pinpoint one to be considered “worst”) than most of the absolute crap on the radio today.

  15. dave   |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2009

Eh!!!! stereogum your comments are totally unfounded .All the doves albums are great in there own unique way …from these two songs I cant wait for the 4th album .Absolute class

  16. martin   |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009

I’ve being hearing comments on the lines of “a complete masterpiece ” from the insiders who have a copy …….really am getting exited …apparently a select few (media types) already have a copy

    • Well these insiders need to leak that shit out, seriously. I’ve already waited four agonizing years to hear some new material. Why torture me?!

  17. “Kingdom Of Rust” is an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G tune .
“Jetstream” is also a G-R-E-A-T opener.
Every Doves album is really special and they always seem to keep their standards in the highest level.
so what are you talking about?

do we really talk about the same band?c mon…

i cant wait to hear their new album…

  18. Scott  |   Posted on Feb 15th, 2009

Dan – you’re a huge prick. You clearly don’t get doves’ music by your comments. You’re absolutely WRONG and maybe you should put down the doves’ CDs forever and go listen to pop music, as you’ve proved that you only like their ‘poppier’ moments. You’ve probably never even heard an album in its entirety. You probably heard one of their singles on the radio, and was subsequently disappointed and frustrated when you found the album material too intelligent for you. EAT. MY. COCK.

    Beautiful song and poignant video.
Does anybody know who the actor is?

  20. john  |   Posted on Feb 28th, 2009

Massive fan of the doves…got to know them well over 10yrs ago with the man who told everything…lost souls brilliant debut album …kingdom of rust is a welcome return..cant wait to see them again in belfast

  21. Doves are the best band in the world at the moment. The fact that they’re not more mainstream isn’t because Doves aren’t great it’s because the mainstream blows. Hip-hop crap, rap rock schlock, Coldplay’s corporate dreck. Doves are the real thing and if more people start to realize that, great. If not, hell, I can’t let it bother me. All I know is that the Last Broadcast is one of the best albums I’ve ever heard in my life and both Lost Souls and Some Cities are really great, too. So I’m guessing that Kingdom of Rust will also be similarly kick-ass, in a moody sort of way.

People, go see Doves live and all you doubters will be licking your paws as you scrape the bottom of the humble pie jar!! LIVE PEOPLE LIVE!! Manchester forever. mancmonkey

what Mav and Scott said – I can’t say better than they already have. Anyone know who the guy in the vid is?

  24. Cordelia Chase  |   Posted on May 8th, 2009

Neil Newbon is the actor. Witness the fitness.
