Papercut Jason Quever’s voice surprised me on “Future Primitive,” a dreamy, psychedelic track from his forthcoming You Can Have What You Want. I’m familiar with, and have listened to, the San Francisco’s songwriter’s Mockingbird and Can’t Go Back, but this is more classic and dusty seeming that I remembered. While still clearly pop, there’s a hazy weight to it, like what you might find with the best autumnal Zombies (or maybe via a track by one of his Gnomonsong label’s owners, Andy Cabic). The entire collection was capture via analog tape, which might have something to do with it, or it could be all the out-of-focus press photos he’s taken. Whatever the case, “Future Primitive” is a good song that ends up in a good place: You feel like you’ve known it for ages, but are still just figuring it out.

You Can Have What You Want is out 4/14 via Gnomonsong. Beach House’s Alex Scally worked on some of the album’s arrangements. A couple live dates:

02/25 – San Francisco, CA Swedish American Hall *
04/24 – San Francisco, CA Cafe Du Nord #

* Noise Pop show w/ Mountain Goats
# = w/ Cryptacize, The Finches

  2. i’ve been a papercuts fan for some time & am surprised to say this, but to me nearly everything about this track sounds like radiohead

  4. God, I love Papercuts.

  5. this song rules!

  6. I love the drum – something you’d expect to hear in a song by The Temptations! It’s similar to the sound of the percussion in that Department Of Eagles song “No One Does It Like You”. Both have this really cool motown-ish like vibe that feels really ’60′s…

  7. wow, very nice
