When we posted St. Vincent’s Actor album art, a number of comments focused on whether or not it was misogynist to focus so much on Annie Clark’s appearance. True enough, a few folks were a bit overly excited in their descriptions — go outside and see the world, you. Then again, as kidacomputerok put it (albeit with more colorful sentences and phrases before and after this central thesis):

“[S]ince there’s ONLY a tracklisting and cover photo of her effervescent visage here and NOT MP3s of the actual songs, how the fuck are we supposed to comment on the music?”

Now we have music. Clark debuted a couple Actor tracks at San Francisco’s NoisePop festival this past Friday (2/27): Check out album opener “The Strangers” and shredder “Marrow.”

“The Strangers”

“Marrow”

Actor is out 5/4 via 4AD. Chances to see these in person:

03/18 Austin, TX @ Central Presbyterian Church (4AD SXSW showcase)
03/20 Austin, TX @ Antone’s (Billions Corporation SXSW showcase)

  1. Aw cheese, does this mean I can’t make any descriptive comments regarding her appearance without my nuts being legitimately chewed off by wild roaming feminists now?

Ah well. Marry Me was pretty super, I’m excited.

  2. it sounds like a fantastic progression, especially considering how she was playing some of the marry me stuff live in her prior tours. also i believe i may be this person from the cover art post (“True enough, a few folks were a bit overly excited in their descriptions”), and i contemplated commenting with YEAAAAAH HELL YEAH WOO WOO, but instead i’ll settle for a silent fist pump.

Can’t wait for the album and can’t wait to see her live again. And about the misogynist comments, I was with a female friend at the Plug Awards last year and she hadn’t ever heard of St. Vincent. When she first came on stage, my friend’s only reaction was, “my god, that girl is gorgeous” and recently admitted to having a girl crush on her after I told her about the new album. My straight female friend also made some comments that probably would have been considered misogynist such as “I’d hit it!” Is it misogynist if it comes from a woman?

That said, loving “The Strangers” not sure about Marrow yet. Wonder how soon before it leaks. And would it be too much to ask for another Other Music show again Annie?

    pretty? sure. boring? yes.

  5. To letusappreciateherbeautyfulmusic, I don’t know about misogynist but Ariel Levy might call her a female chauvinist pig.

But anyway, I am really looking forward to this album and “The Strangers” sounds great.

These songs sound very impressive.. I’m liking the combination of those quasi-orchestral sounds in the backing track and the awesome fuzzy guitar riffing.. She’s obviously very talented but I thought the last album was a little stiff, maybe a bit fussy in the production and arrangements, so I’m hoping that this new one captures more of the feel of her live shows.

  7. Thanks for the shout-out, Stosuy, but like my homies in MGMT, I’m gonna have to ask you for some scratch for using my shit w/o permission.*

*Or, you know, another lovely picture of Annie Clark would be sufficient.
