SNL continued to surprise me with its music picks by inviting backwoods troubadour Ray LaMontagne to join Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson at Studio 8H over the weekend. Ray would have been a perfect fit during the show’s earliest years (think Joe Cocker, Levon Helm, Van Morrison), whereas booking the raspy singer/songwriter in 2009 seems somewhat inspired. Not inspired enough to justify watching the entire broadcast live, but I did anyway. There was one sketch I laughed at (“Sports Show”) and an Update bit with Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel that didn’t hold my attention. I apparently spent those minutes thinking of puns for this post title instead. You can watch the aforementioned comedy sketches at Videogum. Ray’s “You Are The Best Thing” and older hit “Trouble” (you were expecting “Meg White“?) are after the jump.
