Last time we posted a Victoria’s Secret bra ad, Lykke Li provided the music while Heidi Klum sold us on the Ipex line’s microsmooth fabric and nipple concealment. In this new spot, Miranda Kerr models the Dream Angels push-up to the Celtic strains of Joanna Newsom’s “Sprout And The Bean.” It was filmed in the woods, so that’s probably why the elfin harpist’s music came to mind.

Joanna recently debuted new tunes at a secret show in Big Sur. Naturalismo was there.

Ok. That is unforgivable. For one, from a gender politics perspective, contributing to a bra commericial with a barbie shaped model is not cool. Second, she didn’t have the decency to record a new song for the commercial, like Stephen Merritt did in some car commercial he did. Instead, she demeaned one of her older songs, treasured by her fans. I just can’t believe Newsom needs the money enough to justify this. It’s not like she’s some unknown act just trying to make some money in the biz. Newsom can go on tour and sell out every show. This transaction is gross.

you’re gross. most people who listen to joanna newsom are probably consumers of victoria’s secret undies. so eat it up, voomer.

This saddens me profoundly. I guess my image of Joanna Newsom as someone with integrity, as someone who wouldn’t promote unhealthy body images and push up bras, is false. I was already a little sickened by her movie and bank commercial licensing, but there’s no way I can let this push up bra one go. She’s on Drag City too, so I know for a fact that she has the final say authorization on the use of her music. Jesus, money wins every time. Imagine if Fugazi or Shellac soundtracked a beer commercial. Actually, this is worse, because a beer commercial doesn’t try to convince people to fake who they are, it just tells them to drink beer. What’s next Joanna, the theme song to The Swan? Save your soul, give the blood money away to a charity and stop sullying your music.

Sprout and the Bean as the background music for a Malt liquor campaign. Prophylactics? Why not? Product placement potential, like the horizon, is infinite.
