Last week we got a bite-sized taste of Animal Collective’s “Zero” remix. Their version of the It’s Blitz! single (and SNL-approved) track shows up as the B-side of a limited-edition 7″. If your turntable’s broken, though, you can hear it now. Where does it rank with the parade of mostly unnecessary remixes? To date, Erol Alkan‘s remains the best for cutting rugs. Animal Collective take drugs to make “Zero” to take drugs to, aka it’s a tripped-out under(bong)water dub-fest with pitch shifted vocals and lots of space. In other words, not so surprising. What is surprising is that it feels a bit lazy.

To bad it had to fit on the side of a 7″ — would’ve been nice to hear this pulse for another few minutes.

It’s Blitz is out via Interscope. The “Zero” 7″ is available as a limited-edition bonus at Insound.

bloop bleep bloo bloop. bip bip bloop bloooooommmp blip.

    my subwoofer loves it

  2. They should’ve futz’d around with Karen O’s vocals a little more. When they’re demonstrated as bare as they are here, they come off as uninspired and untextured, mainly due to her lyrics which verge on mild corniness. Still it’s all a little cool sounding, at least.

They did a nice job, surely better than the other remixes I have heard of this song. As far as changing her voice anymore, I like how the changes were subtle, yet noticeably different in the various pitch changes. The result fits well with the rest of the song and I think anymore changes on it wouldn’t have held the same effect.

  4. right when i thought it was getting getting kinda boring those high pitched noises come in for the last minute and a half or so and crack it open. so good

  5. Mirando RMX >>>> Zero RMX

  6. this isn’t good.

  7. I’m was actually get a little tired of this song due to all the live appearances and remixes, but this is a nice change of pace.

  8. warning. this remix contains a contact high

I love it when pretentious asses try to justify a lazy work. Makes them sound even more stupid.

  10. I like both bands, but damn – “lazy” sums it up pretty well.

This is the definition of uninspired.

  11. I was interested in this at first but after hearing it…but I knew Animal Collective would fuck it up.

  12. Wow – way to take the rhythm, soul, coherence and fun out of this song, AC.

  13. This is just terrible. Check out the Nite Cells remix of Heads Will Roll. Best YYYs remix from the new album I’ve heard.

MSTRKRFT turned Zero into crap as well, so don’t feel too bad Animal Collective folk.

Not too bad actually. Could have been better for sure, but I thought the original was pretty bland to begin with. I personally prefer the AC version.

  15. Animal Collective is the worse band to see daylight
    Listen to some Kanye West
808′s is the album of the century

Who is Kanye West ripping off now?

This remix is great. The original song is kinda boring.

  17. space men mad  |   Posted on Apr 17th, 2009

you totally ripped off the spacemen 3, and not in a good way. Taking drugs….

  18. sounds minimal in a meaningful way. not lazy in the production – lazy in the feel, yes. i think this is a pretty good remix.

yeah this is BORING. really disappointing seeing how both bands are so ambitious and innovative in their own right. soooo bad wow, this is the most boring remix possibly ever?

Animal Collective don’t understand that a good song should take you on an emotional journey from one place to another, and that this is achieved through the use of CHORD CHANGES. What boring, masturbatory bullshit this is.

that is one giant chunk of bullshit right there.
