While we were grossly sweltering in the desert, of Montreal enjoyed perfect weather in our neighborhood for a sold-out three-night run at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg. Although it would be more fun to see what Kevin would wear in the desert. These YouTube videos suggest we missed a theatrical (though relatively tame) stage show from KB’s toy factory, but instead of peripheral quips about dancing buddhas or horsefeed, these gigs offer something more aurally substantial in the form of two new tunes: “Like A Tourist” (which got its debut a week ago in Chapel Hill) and “Coquet Coquet.” They’re both in the realm of the psychedelically lined freakout dance stuff of Hissing Fauna… and Skeletal Lamping (maybe a little less manically fractured than Lamping at least), with lots of rock in the guitars (live, anyway) and a bona fide guitar hero moment for the Late B.P. Helium on “Like A Tourist.”

Of Montreal’s psychedelic pop pushes listener
Of Montreal, the brainchild of Ohio native Kevin Barnes, has forged major artistic ground on its eleventh album, Paralytic Stalks, departing from the pop song format, funk influence and erotic content that has become synonymous with the band.
Of Montreal: The Sweet With The Sour
Of Montreal's early releases were loaded with playful but confessional acoustic tunes, but the band soon embraced glam-rock's freakier side on albums like Hissing Fauna Are You the Destroyer? and Skeletal Lamping. It was a shift fans might not have ...

The Thursday night show was amazing. I entered a fan and emerged a disciple. Kevin Barnes is a rock god and is growing into our generation’s Bowie. Just when we need him most.

  6. Aw, his daughter’s on stage! She’s going to have the strangest childhood memories.
