As with any supergroupy assemblage of rock stars, Jack White and Alison Mosshart et al’s Dead Weather get the benefit of automatic headline status. But along with the instant attention comes the heightened is-it-more-about-the-sum-or-the-parts scrutiny. Their Bowery show seemed to thrill most, but mostly for the combustion of White and Mosshart’s oversized charisma. As for the music itself: try your ears on the whiplashing “Treat Me Like Your Mother.” It’s a stock rocking Jack riff, some snarls from Alison, some clumsy but obligatory lead vocal trade-offs, with the climax ostensibly coming via some punning on the word “manipulate.” They’re all playing like they mean it, but there isn’t much meaning to what they’re playing. Chalk this one up to being more interesting for the associated tag set than the song it produced.

    • You clearly didn’t make it past the 1:30 mark sister sarah katherine.

I’m sure he/she did, I did, and I’ll agree it is quite boring. What’s after 1:30? Not much…little bit of rage without zach, some annoying spelling, and a guitar solo that white should be playing but isn’t. Actually I just forgot the song I was reviewing (and don’t care to hit play again) so that’s a fitting testament to it…

    Dear Jack,
Can we get some new White Stripes instead?
    Thanks, Music Fans

killer song. jack would be a god if he’d playing this in the 70′s.

  3. Jack’s new criteria for starting a band… Someone in the band must look like Brendan Benson…

  4. Hopefully we will see a Dead Weather, Nazareth, and Sugarloaf tour.

this is made of awesome, ,and win.

stereogum doesn’t approve of this because it’s not animal collective or grizzly bear.

  7. *phew*

    The Kills are safe…

  8. what a fun fucking raucous

  9. pretty deece, although I do hope some of Horehound has a little more substance

  10. Jakob  |   Posted on May 27th, 2009

Sounds like they are coming up with the song as they go.

  11. wow. this is really awful.

  12. I think the track could of benefited from more bottom and bigger drums. Upon this first listen, it doesn’t take my breath away but great songs rarely do. It may grow on me like a creeping vine.

  13. I didn’t know Zach De La Rocha was in this band

  14. Burg   |   Posted on May 27th, 2009

I’m not sure that this song would be very popular if this were a band of new comers. Seems bland to me … “who’s go it figured out?” ..seems like a gatorade or nike commercial or something..

    Ok … I am ready for a – score …hit me baby.

  15. just bad

  16. Jack  |   Posted on May 27th, 2009

That was pretty terrible, glad I didn’t get the tickets yet for that tour!

  17. terrence  |   Posted on May 27th, 2009

in Jack White’s world, we all play bass.

  18. Thomas  |   Posted on May 27th, 2009

I really wanted to like this since it seemed like such a great combination of talent but this is just not interesting. I would have listened to something else after about 30 seconds but at the urging of an earlier commenter I listened to the whole thing. To my disappointment it never got any better.

  19. Grand  |   Posted on May 28th, 2009

Why can’t jack just let her sing alone? They don’t need to layer his voice under hers. It makes the whole collaboration pointless for me when he’s all over everything.

  20. FreeParty  |   Posted on May 29th, 2009

She has only so much talent in the bangs and Jack cant help his disposition.

  21. This rocks. It’s just them having fun rocking out. Not the greatest music ever but it’s not bad either.

  22. Definitely its a nice song…why compare with others ….You can enjoy listening to it..its really high on tempo…Great work..

  23. Enough’s enough man. The White Stripes=the greatest band of all time. The Raconteurs=the greatest semi-decent unnecessary side project of all time. The Dead Weather=the snooze button until fucking noon.

stereogum sucks and all of you there suck

Comment boards are fun…in a “i don’t have a life and i live in my parents basement so i’m going to crack every artist who doesn’t sound like arcade fire” sorta way. This is a group of musicians stretching out…..trying some new things…having some FUN…..and trust me…..the results are far superior to what you and your friends would come up with. Are the lyrics stupid? Yes. Who cares! Many of my favorite lyrics are stupid….I often prefer stupid to sincere. Now………….breathe out.
