Pairing the “Peace will come to me” refrain with opening images of an androgynous beauty in uniform, Depeche Mode’s video for “Peace” appears to be headed down a heavy-handed militarily metaphorical road from the start. Which is so not as fun as self-propelled homicidal cars! The video doesn’t belabor the G.I. Jane stuff though, which is good; it’s more about this lady’s internal peace quest, the shit she’s suffered through, the psyche of a soldier. Pairs nicely with the tune’s electronic/gospel vibe.

That must have been one depressing dish she was washing. Sound Of The Universe is out via Mute/EMI.

I’m a Depeche Mode fan since the first album in 1981 (when I was 16), and I’ve seen all their concert since the Black Celebration tour (in 1986 at Forest National in Brussels). But I’m so surprised that “Peace” is the second hit of the new album! In fact it’s even the one I removed from my track list! I don’t like the video either, in fact I miss Anton Corbijn’s touch… even if “Wrong” was a great one (and a great song!). To me, Sounds of the Universe is awesome, except for “Peace”. Enuff said.
