One of the things I always tell people I love about Bonnaroo is the lack of noise ordinances and curfews, allowing bands to start late at night/early in the morning, helping create a suspended and loopy state of reality over its four-day stretch. On the downside, I still feel like a truck hit me. So it’s somewhat refreshing and heartening to my legs to see Lollapalooza’s timetable, which as always packs as many acts as possible across its stages before Grant Park’s 10PM cutoff. For the most part the conflicts are limited, but there will be some decisions ahead: e.g. Fleet Foxes vs. Crystal Castles; Andrew Bird vs. of Montreal; Gang Gang Dance vs. Dan Deacon; TV On The Radio vs. Lykke Li; the triple-header Lou Reed vs. Deerhunter vs. Snoop Dogg; and the headline hours may be tough on the masses on Saturday (Beasties or Tool) and Sunday (Jane’s or the Killers). Here’s a look at the spread:

  1. Fleet Foxes vs. Crystal Castles? More like Fleet Foxes vs. Asher Roth! Toughest decision of my life

    • steve  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2009

Crystal Castles was AWFUL at sasquatch. Skip if you’re on the fence.

      • Crystal Castles were out of control on Bonnaroo. Then again, their set started at 1 am and the dark tent filled with glow sticks and fog made the experience intense, so a 5 pm set would probably be less enjoyable. I think you can’t lose either way (assuming your choices were Fleet Foxes and Crystal Castles).

  2. For some reason lollapalooza looks a lot more appealing in schedule format than in lineup format. AND I can be in bed before 9 on Sunday–no way in hell i’m sticking around for any of those headliners.

  3. I would have to politely disagree. Seeing this schedule, I felt immediately conflicted. I don’t think it’s just the head-to-head conflicts presenting problems here. It’s things like the second half of Deerhunter/Lou Reed/Snoop bleeding into the first third of MSTRKRFT’s set. Diplo’s set conflicting with The Band Formerly Known as just AnCo. Fleet Foxes bleeding into a potentially killer A-Trak set. I don’t know. Seems like a lot of conflicts, but maybe it’s just like this every year. I’m a n00B b00B.

This is (along with ACL fest) a good example of why less is sometimes more. Also, it’s a good example of why VOODOO Fest may lsometimes ook underbooked but, in ACTUALITY, is the finest festival in the land. There’s always Bourbon St. for the after party & the Butthole Surfers free show!!!!!
    Widespread Panic withstanding, that is….

  5. Jane’s Addicition, The Killers, or go home after the Band of Horses set? Not a tough decision at all.

  6. Lolla always has the most conflicts. It’s like they do it on purpose.

  7. Is Jane’s Addiction relevant anymore? Same basic setlist at every show. Processed vocals. They’re headlining this year because Perry started Lollapalooza so he can pretty much come back any time he wants. This is the same guy that blessed us with Satellite Party. I went to a NIN/JA show last month and was sad to see that Nine Inch Nails was OPENING.

  8. Fleet Foxes > Crystal Castles,
    of Montreal > Andrew Bird,
Dan Deacon > Gang Gang Dance,
Deerhunter > Snoop Dogg > Lou Reed

The only one I’m on the fence about is TVOTR or Lykke Li

I assume I am the only one torn between Bat For Lashes and Portugal. The Man. Also, the DJ booth is going to wreak havoc on my plans. Have to see SMD over Andrew Bird / of Montreal and MSTKRFT over Band of Horses. Oh well, good thing almost half the bands have already come to Chicago this year.

  10. of montreal was the best set of bonnaroo imo. definitely go over andrew bird.

Y’know, rap doesn’t work that well live and the Beasties are old-ass men who still act like children and havent released an album I care for.

I’m not a big Tool fan. I was in middle school. Then again, I was a big Beastie Boys fan too.

I imagine Tool will be more exiting.
That said, both audiences will be intolerable.

  11. 1. they booked Asher Roth… eww

    2. skip the dance music and watch the real bands, you can listen to that electro bullshit in headphones anytime and it is worlds better than a live set that equates to putting a microphone up to your laptop

  12. I gotta take Beasties over Tool only because I’ve seen Tool.

Get there early Saturday and see Ezra Furman & the Harpoons, totally worth it.

i’ll be missing lolla this year (taking a trip to chicago for pitchfork instead), but there are definitely some ballbusters about who to see. neko case v. vampire weekend? decisions decisions.

plus, it looks like andrew bird’s playing two sets on friday? one against of montreal and another 30 minute set during the headliners? if so, that’s awesome

  14. sbar  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2009

not happy with the lou reed/deerhunter clash!

and i agree, asher roth is…ewwww.

  15. Did anyone noticed how nobody played while Radiohead played their set at Lolla last year? And does anybody know why?

Because they ALL wanted to see them play. Radiohead fucking rule. They truly are the gods of the 21st century.

As far as this year goes..

    Fleet Foxes > Crystal Castles
    Andrew Bird > Of Montreal
Gang Gang Dance < Dan Deacon
TV On The Radio > Lykke Li
    Beastie Boys < Tool
The triple-header: Lou Reed < Deerhunter.. fuck Snoop Dogg.

  16. So many hard decisions.
For me the hardest has to be sundays 6:30 slot
Lou Reed Vs. Deerhunter Vs. SnOOP aLOOP

    WTF>W!!??!??!!

  17. i kind of feel like lollapalooza ropes people in to buying weekend passes when they release their lineup and then screws them over by scheduling samey bands at the same time. i mean, there are tons of conflicts out there for the stereogum folks while there are an equal number of dead zones in other parts of the schedule. it seems to me that there could be a lot less conflict if there was a little effort put in.

  18. Chris  |   Posted on Jun 17th, 2009

I may have to go just for Dan Deacon!

  19. skipkb  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2009

i was SO excited to see snoop, just so I could smoke a blunt for the first time in 5 years and listen to whats my name live, I mean its SNOOP. Alas, I couldn’t look myself in the mirror if I missed Lou Reed for that shit. I mean its Lou REED.

Personally, I think pitting Tool against Beastie was a bad choice. I feel like more people are going to be torn between the two then anyone wants to admit. Both have a lot of casual fans (and loyal, hardcore fans!), both evoke a lot of nolstagia, and both will put on a good show. Then again, I can’t think of a better way to distribute the 6 headliners.

    Beastie vs Depeche
    Tool vs Killers
    Kings vs Janes

maybe?? Kings might steel perry’s thunder though

  20. Yeah anyone who misses Lou Reed is a dickhole.

  21. Love the schedule graphics. Those will come in handy. I’ll be there to see Portugal. Thanks for the info.

  22. There’s only a few legit bands that are unopposed headliners. Of the 5 Chicago Lollas there have only been 2 – Radiohead and Pearl Jam (these 2 also have the same accomodation at any other festival they play).

  23. There’s only a few legit bands that are unopposed headliners. Of the 5 Chicago Lollas there have only been 2 – Radiohead and Pearl Jam (these 2 also have the same accomodation at any other festival they play). Without one this year is cool too – but there is something about EVERYONE being on the south field all together sharing the same experience – sort of like a gathering of the tribes.

  24. Emster  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2009

No one else is conflicted about Kings of Leon vs. Depeche Mode vs. Crookers & Kid Cudi? I wanted to see all 3.

  25. So how long before we can all clone ourselves and finally be able to watch two bands play at the same time?

  26. Many of the bands I want to see the most (Gas Light, Bon Iver, Blind Pilot, Langhorne Slim, Gomez, Delta Spirit, Greencards, Ra Ra Riot) are early in the day, which means I can go home and nap before the evening shows. I don’t know how you younger folks make it through the entire day, all weekend…

The major conflict for me is Bon Iver v. Kevin Devine… both are incredible. I have no idea what I’m going to do… the rest is somewhat easy for me. The only other thing I have trouble with is Andrew Bird v. Of Montreal… but I’m leaning towards Andrew.
