In February, before Nathan Williams’ drug-fueled onstage breakdown, apology and canceled European tour, Pete Ohs shot this video of Wavves trekking around Europe, smoking pot (+ regular cigarettes), chugging vodka, rocking out next to some kid in a Velvet Underground shirt, eating tasty breakfast foods, and generally having a good time. Let it be a lesson to those of you who want to avoid drug-fueled onstage breakdowns. Just kidding, we all know that was overhyped/blown out of proportion. Right, Psychedelic Horsehit?

i’ve gotta disagree. i was digging the fun-ness of that video. reminds me of skate videos back in the 90s, when they were more about lifestyle than tricks.
and speaking of skateboarding / “feel-good” music videos, i’d say this is a much better take on the concept than the new dinosaur jr. video. as much as i hate to talk shit on dinorsaur jr, that was just ill-conceived and a little embarrassing. i’m down with old guys skating but did they have to make it so blatantly fake?

I thought this band would suck, just reading about everyone hating ( then again, I’m not an avid pitchfork reader so I missed the hype). But I watched this video, hearing waaves for the first time, and I thought it was pretty good. Not great, but I don’t think it sucked.
The “in-your-face” substance abuse seems a little pretentious, but I’m sure thats his lifestyle, and I can appreciate the honesty in that, if its legit.

in regards to the music and video. i think Wavves will be a cornerstone for future music critic generations. “It was the time when the studio was just not enough” I mean this is a good record, but there is no reason to see this live, you feel stupid and empty, it doesn’t even come close to the sound he was able to achieve in the records, and not in a good way. Its not like when you see the old Ramone’s videos and they sucked on stage and the record had that same “i don’t care vibe”; i feel like this kid got no charisma and is all reverb and fuzz, and the layers of it all come off when he performs and then you realize you are looking at nothing on stage… not like the charisma of those first punk bands.
I do think he should keep making music but maybe people will value the recorded product and not neccesarily expect anything from you live… which is what i think happened to this dude. i gotta admit i heard it, i loved it, saw it live and was very dissapointed. the sound on the record is of a band on the brink of destruction, seeing it live takes all of the powerful music away, this kid is just fucking around…

The biggest thing in regards to Wavves is that he just doesn’t care about his fans. If you read that Pitchfork ‘apology’ interview, he just talks about how he doesn’t remember anything cos he was on so many drugs cos hes so ROCK AND ROLL. He doesn’t ever really say ‘I’m sorry people who paid to come see me got nothing’ or anything like that.
Now, I realize that he’s not used to having fans, didn’t ‘ask’ for them, anything like that, but still these people are the reason he can, right now, make a living off of making music, and he just doesn’t give a shit about them, which is really the most distasteful thing about him.
I agree that wavves is very overrated, but my friends are huge fans for some reason, so i went to a (free) show two weeks ago. my opinion hasnt changed, but nathan is actually a great guy, from what i can see. at the end, he came off the stage and chatted with us in the crowd for a while

When P4k first mentioned Wavves a few months back the hype train was already chugging along, they just added a shitload of fuel to the fire. And when they wrote about the Barcelona show they were merely doing their job. It’s not like they put up a long rant against the kid, denouncing his name and drawing penises on his face. They merely relayed what happened with a little opinion thrown in about the cause of it.
