We last saw Orenda Fink in the Lynchian, dreamily menacing video for “Permanent Scar,” the lead track from the self-titled debut by O+S, her project with Scalpelist (aka Cedric LeMoyne of Remy Zero). Taking part in another collaboration, “Behind The Mountains” features her guest vocal turn with longstanding Athens instrumentalists Japancakes. It comes complete with Japancakes first ever video, an ethereal trek into some glittery, ribboned fairy realm created by director Ryan Berg. Visually Orenda’s joined by Whitney Able, Kelly Boehmer, Shannon Malone, Elizabeth Hendrix, Laura Slade, and Kinsey Packard, but she’s the only one actually singing.

There are going to be three versions of “Behind The Mountains.” The other vocal version features lyrics and a performance in Mandarin by Moon (Miss Stocking). Then, of course, because it’s Japancakes, we’ll get something instrumental, too. You’ll be able to find the songs packaged with the video on iTune on 7/28.

  1. Not digging this sound at all…too dull but that’s just my preference.

    • The preferences and opinions of “Mr Blue Angel Dood” are extremely important for every music fan to hear. I, for one, will not listen to this track because “Mr Blue Angel Dood” listened to it once and doesn’t dig it.

Fantastic. I love that fact that 10 seconds into the song I’m already in new fresh state of mind. Memorizing. Japancakes w/ lyrics…. LOOK OUT !

Beautifully done. Dreamy. Exquisite. Sexy. Dripping with otherworldliness. I want in.

What is up with all the bands these days taking the word Japan and adding some word beginning with pan to it?
    Japandroids?
    Japanther?
    And now Japancakes?

Japancakes have been around since ’96 with countless number of albums out on Kindercore and Darla records. So, what’s up with all of the “Japan” names? The others have stolen it from them, ya’ dumb dick. Viva la Jashitcakes!!

Well my comment says nothing about who was first or who is copying who, just that they are strange band names and I have been hearing about a few bands with similar names. But thanks for calling me a dick, dick.

Japancakes have been around for quite some time though…

    Digging this jam.

  6. Japanther has been around for a while too.

  7. Gorgeous, even if I wanted to pull off those ribbons from their eyes.

There is the voice of God, and then there is the voice of Orenda Fink.
