The Los Angeles quartet Division Day are releasing their sophomore full-length Visitation the middle of next month. The 11-song collection was produced by NIN/Beck bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen, who gave the group a denser, thicker sound. Compositionally, the guys have reinvented themselves as a more maturely dark and focused band than you heard on Beartrap Island. They’re calling the shift “post-industrial blackened romantigaze,” though even with some face paint on the album art, they’re still nowhere close to being mistaken for fellow Californians Xasthur or Leviathan. (Instead, there’s something vaguely MBV about one of the backdrop guitar squeals.) Listen to the newborn Division Day via the album’s lead track “Chalk Lines.”

Visitation is out 8/18 via Dangerbird.

I want to like this, they seem to be talented and at least attempting some innovation in their sound. Unfortunately, the singer still detracts me from repeated listenings. I wish he wouldn’t try so hard to be as unique as he probably thinks he is. It sounds a little less marble-mouthed than the previous record, but still. The drummer is amazing live though, so they’ll always have that going for them. Hope the rest of the album surprises me.

  4. beartrap island was a great album and never got the attention it deserved

Division Day on stereogum eh? that’s amazing!!!! I’ll agree that Beartrap is overlooked but so is everything else by them. The first two e.p.’s they did were my fave. Loving this song too :D
