Last night Jarvis Cocker gave a spirited and loose-limbed performance of his Further Complications title track. He clearly enjoyed himself (and his magic hands). To further complicate things, though, there was a certain Roots drummer on site who was less than thrilled with the Pulp man’s presence. As Questo Tweeted during the evening’s festivities:

hmmm. fighting the urge to get jarvis cocker for that MJ incident some years back. dude looks THROWED.

You be the judge of his throwedness.

In case you forget, the so-called “MJ incident.”

Not sure if ?uestlove caught this, but Jarvis was pretty unrepentant when discussing Jackson’s death a few weeks ago.

Further Complications is out via Rough Trade. ?uestlove is all Tweet no action.

I never even knew about this incident… that is hilarious. Have fun in hell, Michael Jackson. It will only feel like an eternity…

Old school Brit stage antics…Who won in the end?… MJ or Johnny Butterworth?

  3. what the hell does “throwed” mean? 10 pts for jarvis’ performance, 25 pts for jarvis’ mj incident and 50 pts for jarvis’ “he invented the moonwalk” comment. questo? zero pts.

I know this site is for dorky white guys, and this may seem shocking, but I’ll take The Roots and Questlove over Jarvis Cocker any day.

    Throwed.

    Imma this. Imma that.

My enthusiasm for Questlove and The Roots cannot be denied. But it breaks my heart to see & hear talented black men using & perpetuating Ebonics and other useless street slang in an effort to be “cool”, “have street credibility” or otherwise.

White folks and text message abbreviations are just as guilty of it.

So much for leading by example.

All hail The Death of Grammar.

    • wow. you sound boring.

personally, i think it’s possible to use a phrase, no matter your skin tone, like “imma get throwed tonight” and still completely understand and respect grammar and the english language. but, then again, i don’t have a stick up my ass.

  6. Cool performance.

    Throwed = Wasted. (I think!)

Had no idea about the Brit Awards incident but I give him the thumbs up for even daring. Way better than that time the Rage Against the Machine guy climbed up a side of the stage at the VMAs!

  7. Ones tempted to think that the drummer wouldn’t of given a hoot had Jackson been alive.

Taking color out of the equation Jarvis’ stunt at the brits was harmless enough and certainly two wrongs wouldn’t have made a right.

I’d like to see Jarvis ruin a Roots set by taking MJ’s shriveled, formaldahyded dick and shoving it up “Questo”‘s hairy asshole.

    Yeah, FUCK YOU, cocksucker.

According to Urban Dictionary, “throwed” is Houston slang for being wasted, high, or both. I suppose for someone with little to no success in the States, you’ve got to make something of an impression. Roots > Aging Britpoppers

  10. I don’t care who’s throwed or not. I’m with Questlove just because Jarvis sucked so bad. What was that trash?

  11. Slim  |   Posted on Jul 31st, 2009

That song is weak sauce. I imagine the only people who still care about Jarvis Cocker are those who still think common people is a cool song and Stephen Thomas Erlewine. 1/2 point for crashing MJ’s stage and making that performance worth watching for a few seconds, though.

    RIP Michael

I have no axe to grind, no props to give in any of the aforementioned music chat. But I feel compelled to point out–not for the first time–how much Jimmy Fallon sucks donkey balls. Although I may be doing a disservice to the positive aspects of donkey ball sucking, by phrasing it as such.

I think everyone’s missing the original point here. You can say what you want about either Jackson or Cocker but the reality is that Jackson’s performance of “Earth Song” was absolutely wretched and Cocker did what we expect bratty young punks to do in such situations. No one is ever going to remember Jackson’s legacy based on this performance or song, because they’re both terrible, especially in light of his other achievements. The man was not Christ then and is not Christ now that he’s dead.

  14. chrischke  |   Posted on Jul 31st, 2009

where was ?uestlove a couple of years ago? why didn’t he “get” cocker back then? may he just be one of the few people jumping (back on) the jacko-wagon? damn hypocrite.

  15. Jarvis > MJ. Just sayin’…

  16. Mike  |   Posted on Jul 31st, 2009

Most of Michael Jackson’s American audience abandoned him 16 years ago, and now that he’s dead, they all want to pretend they never left. Jarvis Cocker totally brought it on Jimmy Fallon’s show, and I’m glad that post-MJ’s death he is still able to keep it real.

You’d think Jarvis would have something better to do than go after MJ and his music. What a douche.

  17. RTX005  |   Posted on Jul 31st, 2009

@Aaron – You are a douche. Questlove is one of the world’s greatest drummers, and Roots are a fine live act, but in the pantheon of important bands, they pale in comparison to Pulp. Don’t front like you know enough about them to rag them out – if you’re calling them “aging,” you’re too young to have followed them when they were making great records. The only reason Questo is tweeting about his “anger” over Jarvis’ brilliant onstage mooning is due to some bizarre “I loved Michael Jackson when I was younger, was progressively weirded out by his behavior and mocked him for it, and now I feel bad I did that because he’d dead” guilt.

  18. Was this Brit thing with Jackson really that relevant? Stateside at least? I have been following his colorful career but I never heard of this hilarious incident. It’s funny how many people judge both MJ and JC so harshly when all we get to see is a snippet of wikipidea info and a 30 second clip of the Brits. How could that clip just garner only 300,000 plus views? Are we just finding this thing out because MJ died and Jarvis just happen to promote something in the US. Actually I was informed that there was a much clearer and longer clip of that but was taken down by Youtube Nazis. We don’t know exactly the sentiments of the people in ’96. MJ in ’96, as I remember, hard to admit was already a gonner, with child molestation charges, and changing appearance, tried to reform his image by marring Lisa Marie to debunk claims he liked boys and grant Oprah an interview which only damaged his image even more. He was fast becoming a late night joke staple and popularity diminishing. Outside the States, however, he is still famous. Thus the Artist of Generation Award by Geldof.
The whole Brit Awards incident I do not know of because first, it wasn’t telecast live and all they got to see were edited. Stupid people like Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn weighing their opinions, only making things confusing. Stateside, I do not remember this being talked about. Recalling past interviews of Cocker, he did not protest against Michael the artist but against that one hubris performance (take note Noel), and that he did not moon MJ (take note Damon).
I was at the Glastonbury when MJ died. Every musicians there jumped at the opportunity of being associated with MJ as if they know the man personally. Everyone, except for the guy who once infamously shared a stage with Jackson, Jarvis Cocker.
That clip in Question time is not fair to Jarvis. What part of that is unrepentant? He was obvs annoyed at the presenter for accusing him of mooning MJ. It would be hypocritical of him if he says something delightful to MJ.
?uestlove, bringing back an incident that have fuzzy details is both unfair to Jarvis, who already regretted and apologized years ago and to Michael who’s no longer here to defend himself.
It was 1996 kids, can we move on now?

  19. I have absolutely no interest in Jarvis Cocker’s opinions or music. Most of the comments on this article are from half of his fans. The other half doesn’t know about stereogum.

  20. nah dude  |   Posted on Aug 3rd, 2009

Cocker says Michael Jackson invented the moonwalk. He did not.
This link is an interesting comp of others doing it way before MJ popularized it. In his defense, I don’t think he ever claimed to have invented it…

  21. why are people still talking about michael jackson? or maybe the better question is why are people trying so hard to sound stupid on this thread?

  22. Throwed  |   Posted on Aug 6th, 2009

Pretending to hate people after they die isn’t any cooler than pretending to love them. The Roots are just as important as a hip hop band/group as Pulp is for what they do.

  23. StillThrowed  |   Posted on Aug 6th, 2009

Also, attacking an intelligent person and talented artist like ?uestlove for using Ebonics by using the descriptive word “throwed” is more than a little racist.

Well, being a fan of britpop and the band Pulp AND living in the U.S., i remember this from a different perspective. This incident id indeed receive mention in the U.S. on the TV news. And it just goes to show how useless TV news actually is in INFORMING objectively and without bias.

The incident was talked about although none of the newscasts which discussed it actually showed any actual footage apart from really grainy still images of children and ‘a guy’ running near them. and with stern disapproving frowns on their faces they dutifully reported that a British “hooligan” ran on stage and harmed children during a Michel Jackson performance on a British awards show. They had no idea that this was the equivalent of the Grammys in the UK, they had no idea that their “hooligan” was Jarvis Cocker of the band Pulp who had a HUGE hit album at the time in the UK (and throughout the world, save for the insular U.S.) But there they were basically perpetuating the Jackson propaganda. After all he was still beloved and these reporters, like the Roots drummer, still looooved the guy based on the fact that they got the warm fuzzies recalling their own past and listening to this freaks records. And at the time, pretending to be Jesus Christ on stage notwhistanding, he was a public oddity already.

But the incident passed. And never did we get any follow up. We never do in this country. We never heard who the “hooligan” was. We never learned why he did what he did. We never learned that no charges were pressed and in fact no children were harmed (By Jarvis at least, Jacksons bodyguards? hmmm?) and we of course had to depend on our cable companies hopefully showing South American MTV en espanol if we wanted to see Pulp and any other European/electronic/britpop/alternative music that were worldwide hits because in America, all you ever got to see was US pop/hip hop nonstop. And so it remains.
