Over the past couple of weeks we’ve heard a few samples of Vivian Girls’ forthcoming Everything Goes Wrong. At the beginning of the summer, they did an unplugged performance of one of those new tracks “When I’m Gone” at the Arena in Vienna. While there, they also strummed through a couple of older songs, “Tell The World” and “I Believe In Nothing.” All three clips offer pre and post-song chatter. And at the 1:30 mark in “I Believe…,” you’ll hear someone getting tortured in the next room.

Thank you Stereogum for posting three songs which basically sound the same and are for some reason played on two guitars while they only consist of 2-3 chords. This is musically terrible. That Neutral Milk Hotel guy also made 3-4 chord songs but he at least knew how to write a tune.

regardless of how you feel about them, lots and lots of bands use basic chord structures besides them and “the dude from neutral milk hotel”
I don’t care for the Vivian Girls but I take exception to your comment about 2-3 or 3-4 chord songs. Most songs only have a few chords. You’re a fucking idiot if you don’t know that. So you might want to make sure you understand music a little better before spouting off your ignorant remarks.
Ok, I will rephrase that. Most of their songs consist of basic EASY and boring chords/chord progressions. You can learn a person who has never played guitar how to play every song Vivian Girls ever made in 3-4 weeks
Lots of famous/good music is simple chord structure… Nirvana for example. Wavves also is very simple. Fact is, people like the music. Personally, I think this acoustic session is great.

Yeah, i wouldn’t compare Jeff Magnum (Neutral Milk Hotel guy) to These girls in a million years. And most everyone you find on this website uses simple chord structure.

I’m pretty sure the songs sounded better in these videos than they ever have. And I don’t mean that in the best way. Also, yeah, she really does suck at rhythm.

I used to be ok with their album but the more I see of them the more I come to hate them. This video, if anything, shows them for what they really are… Bored, boring girls who can barely play, barely keep time, can’t write a decent, thoughtful (or at least clever) song, only sing harmonies a nine year old could come up with, and get by with passable voices… oh wait… two of them are quite attractive… so that’s how they got here… Its like high school all over again! I’m ashamed that they ever called themselves punk, they should just find some boyfriends with nice hair and letterman jackets… they’ll be set then!
I say, in protest, we end the comments with this post. If nobody cares, Stereogum won’t post anything more about them. Besides, if anybody likes them, there won’t be enough of them to matter/ they won’t have anything intelligent to say.

I think Vivivan Girls are high art !!!! Thurston Moore likes them so who cares what you think. I would agree with you only if these girls showed a thread of thoughtfulness or enthusiasm. Calvin Johnson never seemed bored and apathetic to me… who cares if they can’t play their instruments well? It’s the fact that they don’t even care to try to do something really creative that gets me.
