radiohead-ep-monday.jpg

It’s looking likely. The most compelling piece of evidence: wallofice.com redirects you to the W.A.S.T.E. store. So what’s the significance of “wall of ice”? The phrase turned up in the metadata of that “These Are My Twisted Words” MP3 we all feel reasonably certain is a new Radiohead song. And according to this guy’s sleuthing (via TDS), its full file title was “01-radiohead-these _are_my_twisted_words-(advance)-2009-woi.mp3,” where woi probably = wall of ice. And: The phrase also pops up in this cartoon slagging the record and film industry, and we all know how Radiohead like slagging the industry and also love their cartoons right, Stanley Donwood? OK.

So, why Monday 8/17?

AtEase says that date popped up a bunch in the metadata, too.

The internet is such a nerd.

But then, Radiohead make it fun to be a nerd. All of this comes on the heels of Thom telling the world he’s “not very interested in the album at the moment.” So everybody ran wild with that as a statement of hibernation, but everybody ran wild in the wrong direction. An EP would make sense given Thom’s quote. Clearly they’re at least single-minded of late.

Meanwhile, Jonny Greenwood affirmed Thom’s LP disinterest in today’s Australian (via AtEase), while also hinting at the band’s overall productivity by saying “there’s a bunch of [new material] slowly growing.” It’s all happening! Probably!

Next step: Gather your £s and we’ll see you 8/17 at 12AM GMT over at wallofice.com.

  1. This is like a bad relationship. I’m sick of the back and forth. I’m just going to take a step back and let them make the next move, I’ll be waiting if they decide to come back.

  2. Guys, do a “whois” lookup for wallofice.com. Doesn’t look like Radiohead or anyone affiliated with them registered that domain name. This doesn’t necessarily debunk your theory that they’re putting out an EP Monday, but it makes the whole thing seem a bit less likely.

brb, going to go ejaculate in someone’s soup.

  4. Marko  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2009

    Errr.. I mean Dutch people.

  5. I just did the “whois” search and the domain was registered today. Doesn’t really mean much. Could be just a fan trying to fuel the rumor mill or capitalize on it. Anyone can redirect to another domain.

I like these crazy theories, though. I’m inclined to believe the EP and the Twilight song demo theories.

  6. … it could also mean that they hired a web agency from the Netherlands to develop their site…

Anything is possible at this point. Oh well, don’t spend all your money on cheap liquor this weekend, just in case.

Also, remember the In Rainbows – OK Computer binary theory? Gosh, Radiohead fans are such geeks. :o )

The wallofice.com site is just somebody trying to cause a stir. When The Eraser was announced, the website was already in place; ditto for In Rainbows. If this was a real RH site, it would be registered to Courtyard Management in Sutton Courtenay, like all the other RH related sites.

The EP thing all arises from speculation on Atease, I really wouldn’t put too much credence on it. Though it would be nice.

  8. toto  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2009

dammit! Radiohead now OWES us an album on Monday.

  9. There will be riots if this EP doesn’t come out.

  10. anon  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2009

Radiohead, we’re counting on you to shock and surprise us (once again.)

  11. Yeah, I think that wallofice site is a hoax.

Here’s hoping to something on Monday, but I’m trying not to get my hopes up too much.

  12. i mean, this is purely speculation. there’s no need to get all heart-on-sleeve emotionally needy about it.

i’m as excited as the next person about all of the noise radiohead’s been making in my music-related news intake of late, but if nothing happens on monday, i think i’ll go about my monday like i’ve spent mondays for the last twenty months of my life: not disappointed in radiohead, and content with their mass quantity of musical output.

who really wants to be disappointed in something they love?

  13. I’ve got another crazy theory. Maybe someone from Stereogum is behind all of this!

Honestly though I wouldn’t doubt a Monday EP. I mean, is there anything Radiohead could do that would ignite surprise?

  14. No alarms and no surprises.

apparently the main vampire edward cullen is referred to as a “wall of ice” throughout the twilight books…

  16. Just like October 10, 2007, I’ll probably wake up extra early on August 17th and wait to see what comes out of all of this.

    Radiohead, you’ve done it again.

  19. villain  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2009

pretty unlikely that this site is real. for shame, stereogum. for shame.

  20. We are big nerds, but it’s just good fun at this point. RH has made such an impact on listeners and musicians alike with the freedom they celebrate of not being had “by the balls” with record co. etc. The idea of singles and EPs is exciting. There’s a lot of crap that is forced out by those bound by contracts. Then OKC, Kid A… didn’t suck. We haven’t heard the last of them, whatever that means. (musicalsquash.com)

  21. Conor_B  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2009

Well I e-mailed Reshad Bashir, here’s to hoping he reply’s with some information on this new E.P. or alleged hoax.

  22. i have an erection

  23. drno  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2009

    It just leaked.

  24. I’m pretty sure its happening…i don’t know why other hard core fans haven’t found this yet or posted it…but hey, i’m willing to look obsessive…

    go to http://twitter.com/Yussavoice
to see what i think is the new Ep’s cover art….(lame using twitter, but couldent get blog working)

i got it from what i believe is a legit radiohead source…just a not so well known one…

if this is all a big fake…then bravo….but i’m damn excited for this if its all true…
    enjoy
    Y

  25. these silly rumors are NOT newsworthy. Stereogum should be ashamed (And pitchfork too, but theyre at least smart enough to not enable comments… :| )

  26. drno  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2009

It sounds like more of In Rainbows. Pretty good.

    • Sceptic  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2009

I’m going to go ahead and assume that you did not actually find a leak of the ep. I have a hard time believing that this band would allow an entire self-released ep to leak.

Please feel free to prove me wrong.

  27. Michael  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2009

Man, it just leaked, it’s for real.

  28. volk  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2009

It hasn’t leaked yet, but I do still think this is real.

    • drno  |   Posted on Aug 16th, 2009

Yes it has. Did you even try looking for it or are you just assuming it’s not out there? I found it in about 2 minutes. That “”These Are My Twisted Words’ song is on it but goes by a different name.

  29. TCHOCK  |   Posted on Aug 15th, 2009

OHH SHIT MAN! AWWWWWWWW, PSSHHHHHHWHATTTTTTTTTTT. BEN FRANKLIN! I BELIEVE IT WAS HE TO FIRST SAY, ‘THREE MAY KEEP A SECRET IF TWO OF THEM HOODRATS IS DEAD.’ IN RAINBOWS! WHAT ABOUT IT?! IT CAME OUT BLOODY FUCKIN 2 YEARS AGO KID! TWO YEARS! THE AVERAGE SPAN BETWEEN RECORDS FOR INDEPENDENT MUSICIANS IS 3 YEARS MONEY! WE GOT ANOTHER YEAR! I GOT SHIT TO DO YOU BLEEDIN CUNTS!

  30. Don’t get any big ideas… they’re not gonna happen.

  31. Oh, come on, guys, if you just ~believe~ hard enough, it’ll happen!

  32. I want to believe the whole EP thing is going to happen just cuz I am an optimistic person and the band members themselves haven’t said anything yet. *crosses fingers*

  33. I doubt it’ll be live at midnight even if i does come out Monday. In Rainbows wasn’t available until about 8am or thereabouts if I remember correctly?

  34. jake  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

5:10 AM in Britain. No EP on W.A.S.T.E.
I didn’t stay up just for it, by the way, I drink a lot of coffee in a day.

  35. frank  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

Something is happening! New image found on the w.a.s.t.e. server with the words “Twisted Woods” in it…

  36. NEW POST ON DEAD AIR SPACE!!

    These Are My Twisted Words
So here’s a new song, called ‘These Are My Twisted Words’.

We’ve been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished.
    We’re pretty proud of it.

There’s other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we’ve been practicing, and which we’ll probably play at this summer’s concerts. Hope you like it.

Download the audio here or torrent here.
    Jonny

  37. simon  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

i bet the band weren’t expecting that much buzz… they were probably trying to get 3 other tracks finished and mastered with artwork since friday. can’t wait for the next mass radiohead hysteria.

  38. John  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

And what’s the new track posted at http://www.wallofice.com ??

  39. Meowface  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

    http://www.wallofice.com/ says:

“Don’t just publish bullshit only to get hits on your webpage.
Don’t just create your own stories after reading one post on a message board.

    Get your facts straight.”

hrm.. well at least he included an icy little song to listen to

  40. chris  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

can’t wait to see them perform this track live on friday!!!

  41. Da Maverick  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

Apparently, the “icy little song” that is currently at Wall of Ice is titled “btw”

not sure what to make of all this madness.

  42. 66 august butterflies  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

I’ve never been a Radiohead nut…(like my orange too much) but I’ve decided the song suits me just fine right now…Suzie Q Pt 2 etc…

  43. Captain E  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009

I think I have it figured out! Whether the site wallofice.com was started by Radiohead or a fan I do not know but I believe the text and links on it are a sort of cyclical irony:
“Don’t just publish bullshit only to get hits on your webpage.
Don’t just create your own stories after reading one post on a message board.
    Get your facts straight.”
Then it links to two sites that garner ordinary people’s postings about the phrase, as well as whatever they think may be its particular meaning. I think its the sites creators way of saying not to overguess or suppose anything. The meaning of the phrase “wall of ice” is to not try to find any meaning in it!

  44. remarkable bird, the norwegian blue. nice plummage.
