To get you caught up: Last month we mentioned Weezer’s seventh album was on the way. After that, we heard two new, sexed-up songs performed live in South Korea. Then, following a previously unreleased non-album track’s appearance on a Guitar Center compilation, the band finally offered an actual October release date for the collection. We still don’t have the title, no, but we do have the power-popped first single “(If You Are Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To.” (Thanks for the tip, Tony.) At this point, Weezer news is met with a mix of anticipation and horror by longtime fans, but I’m thinking longtime fans will be less horrified this time.
Weezer’s seventh album is out 10/27. The “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” single’s out 8/25.

I was thinking more in terms of albums. I kind of enjoy the song “Pork and Beans.” But yeah, that was quite an oversight on my part.
I mean, there are social situations in which people might play Weezer’s albums, and I’m not gonna be like “Turn that off right now.” So I guess maybe that makes me a bitch?
Well it might be the most awkward sounding title of a song released in 2009 by a band having difficulty staying fresh and relevant since U2′s “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight”, but this one is not too bad. I think I actually like it more than “Pork and Beans”. Then again I also didn’t pay any attention to the lyrics.

that said, the song blows. sorry, weez. where did you go wrong?? hell, people love to hate on maladroit and that is one of the most underrated albums of the decade. but this…this is terrible.
Title’s awkward on purpose, I’d say. The art for it works really well… it’s from the point of view of an awkward guy lookin at his feet. I figure it’s what Rivers knows… being awkward. He has millions of dollars and he was living on a bare mattress in an empty apartment.

I agree, they totally sing songs that are way too immature for them, BUT, do you remember when they did a “mature” album? I do, and it’s called Make Believe, and it’s one of the worst albums of the decade, so, I think they should keep writing these expressive man-boy songs.
Seriously, this isn’t an “immature” song. This is most likely about the way he met his wife Kyoto and proposed to her, which happened like in 2005 or something.

Good chorus, if a little derivative. The irony is, how much of the modish vibe is derivative of Weezer? They’re being influenced by themselves through current modes…it’s pretty odd. Rivers’s kid voice is back. I think he’s singing about his wife, not high school. But they try to have it both ways with the sound and lyrics. It’s okay I guess, only a catch single.
Its better than Pork and Beans, that’s for sure, though everybody liked that song for some reason… This is definitely not a complete disappointment.

And anyway, since when have people only been allowed to evaluate art that they themselves could have created. If you beleive in art, as I do, to be an expression of a person’s soul we would all be obligated to buy every album ever. Fuck that. I have likes and personal taste.

Okay, there’s a little depth here. I like the progression of the “conversation stopping” motif through different life stages. Kinda neat, actually.
God Weezer sucks now
The chorus then actually takes on a different feeling for every stage of stopped conversation, becoming mostly symbolic at the end. I like it.
I try so hard to hate Weezer, but sometimes it’s hard. This isn’t their best, but i enjoyed it.
To the guy who hates this and says Maladroit is one of the underrated albums of the decade: this is a better single than Keep Fishin’. It’s not even close.

Keep Fishin’ is a far better single than this song. It was upbeat, catchy, and more importantly, undeniably Weezer. I do not get the same effect from this song, that’s for sure.
I liked this song better when it was called “Walking on Sunshine.”
I like Maladroit too. Slave is a great song, and the subtle guitar hooks that kind of push the whole thing along show Rivers is a master. I’m just saying this is a better single than Keep Fishin by a long shot.

But wouldn’t you think Weezer’s inability to match their first two non-Sharp records, plus the fact that Sharp was peeved at his lack of songwriting credits, suggests Sharp was more of an influence on songwriting than Rivers would ever admit? I don’t know..just seems to be quite the coincidence. They’re both kinda douche-y anyways, but I’d still love to see Matt and/or Rivers release something fantastic.

I don’t know if it makes people thick, but it is really quite silly at this point. The man was only with them for two albums. And really, does anybody seriously think that Weezer would suddenly be the greatest band in the world if he returned? Like, what has Matt been doing on his own that’s shaking the foundations of music? *cough* Besides, Rivers writes the songs. Ya know?
Funny thing (for me) with Weezer is that other than the Blue Album (every note of which is part of my being) I generally don’t like their new material until a couple years after it’s release (if not longer). I’ve heard Pork & Beans on the radio a couple times recently and came to the realization that I actually like that song. Regardless of that, I’m not sure what people are expecting from the Weez. The have never written complicated, deep songs. Never. Each album has a few great or clever lines that make you smile. But in general Rivers has never been a Bob Dylan kinda writer. Personally, that makes me happy. As does Weezer. Yaaaaay new album that I won’t get into for two years. lol
I agree completely. For one thing, people who love Weezer’s early stuff have unreasonable expectations of Rivers coughing up another Blue Album. It’s tough to really like new things when you love the old stuff. In fact, it’s taken me a while to warm up to all of the Weezer albums I currently like, and that includes the blue one.
We’ve got people on here complaining about Rivers writing about high school, and we’ve got people complaining he doesn’t still write as if he was 15 years younger. It’s tough being Weezer.

They’ve made quite the career for themselves and I can appreciate that…I just don’t care for their music anymore. I don’t think Rivers should necessarily write like he did 15 years ago; I just wish I liked what he’s been doing..period. But hey, just one man’s opinion. I don’t dislike their newer material because it’s new and I don’t dislike it because it’s not the Blue Album or Pinkerton; I dislike it because I don’t think it’s very good. So whether he one day writes another Blue Album or whether he decides to make a reggae album…as long as it’s good I’ll listen to it. Until then I’d rather boo the decline in quality (in my opnion) of Weezer’s output, than try and convince myself that I like their new songs.
Unfortunately I think it happens to everyone. Every artist makes their “best album” and then never lives up to that again… or almost every artist. Even someone like Bob Dylan made his magnum opus years ago, though which album that was may be the subject of some argument. He’s put out good albums since then, at least. Some bands make a great album and then churn out relative crap for the rest of their careers. I think Weezer falls somewhere in the middle, but the best has most likely already happened.

While some people’s complaints about anything post-Pinkerton might be valid, I also think there are A LOT of people too far caught up in past nostalgia and look at anything new by the band objectively. The last time I think the band tried to pander to fans (with Make Believe), they ended up receiving far more hate than ever before, and they just stopped caring on the last album. That’s what I think a lot of people missed about the Red Album. It’s supposed to be ridiculous, and it works.
And let’s face it, Weezer has NEVER been known for good lyrics. EVER. So it matters not what they sing about for the most part.

I no longer can suspend my disbelief to believe that Rivers thinks the girl got hot, that everyone is gettin’ dangerous, or that they want to live in Beverly Hills.

I really disagree. About the pay check part. After listening to and reading interviews with Rivers over the past year or so, I really think the guy has mellowed out since he’s gotten married and had a kid. I think you might be right that his music is no longer his therapy; it seems that a lot of issues he had previously were resolved when he started his family. But I totally disagree that he’s simply writing for a paycheck. It seems like he’s more writing for fun than anything nowadays. In talking about the Red Album Rivers said this:
“Our approach was to get into the studio and try to blow our minds with whatever we wanted to do. To just have fun, so that when we pressed play and listened back to what we did, our minds were just blown. That was the goal.”

Having said all that, after hearing this song I’m totally stoked for the new album. As a hardcore, long time fan, I was prepared to be let down by The Red Album — of course it had some pretty terrible moments (“Dangerous” and “Cold Dark World”) — but I found myself more pleasantly surprised instead. It’s hard not to take Weezer with an enormous grain of salt these days, but there’s always a part of me that hopes that Weezer — my first true love — can surprise and inspire again.

It’s okay. It doesn’t grab me like “Pork and Beans” did when it leaked. Hopefully, the rest of the album will exceed the atrocious Red Album. It’d be hard not to. Drummer Pat Wilson mentioned on his Twitter that they were playing more rock and less pop, though this single suggests otherwise.

Have any of you got a music degree from Harvard? Because Rivers does.
He actually went back and finished it between albums, AFTER he became a millionaire. He’s using his Harvard education to combine musical genres, stop longing for Blue album Part II and move on with your life. Go read a book about musical theory, or learn how to play an instrument. Or better yet, listen to “Greatest Man That Ever Lived” Orchestrating a four part harmony hasn’t been done like that in mainstream rock since Queen and Freddy Mercury.
Have any of you ever seen Weezer live? I have over 15 times. These days, they all take turns on different instruments (Rivers on the drums for the first 4 of the set). That’s musical talent, nay genius.
Until you do one of those things I’ve mentioned above, and have an informed opinion, I suggest you shut your god-damn mouths.

wat do you know about writing music? there are only so many notes that can actually be reached and only so many that sound good all put together in a song and if u write a song and part of it just happens to sound like another song then w.e! you have no idea how hard it is to think of something that hasnt already been written. music has been around forever!
I like Make Believe the most out of any of them. Someone said he can’t suspend his disbelief anymore because he can’t convince himself Rivers Cuomo really wants to live in Beverly Hills. I think he’s missing the point. They aren’t really saying beverly Hills is great, they are making fun of it in a light hearted way. Rivers doesn’t really want everybody to “get dangerous”, he’s talking about how silly the old days were and how much sillier things are now.
I think they’ve been getting better since Pinkerton. Pinkerton was good, but it was still their worst. Everybody made fun of ithat album when it came out too, don’t forget. It too, was called the century’s worst flop. Much like Make Believe today. You say all the new stuff sucks, but nobody’s given a reason besides that it’s not the Blue Album and Pinkerton anymore. What else, besides those unalterable qualities, makes this stuff so bad? You don’t have to like it, but you do have dislike it for an actual reason.

most all weezer is good. it’s not all great, but there is so many songs it is easy to critique. Also, most weezer fans more critical of weezer than any other band on this earth. weezer is like oasis and the foo fighter–everyone has their first few albums, less people their third, and it’s a crap shoot after that. i think if another band put out their later albums more people would like them. it isn’t cool to like the weez anymore. oh well. oh, they asked matt to come back before make believe but were turned down. too bad, so sad.

I’m so with Mark about weezer, I love these guys’ sense of humour which is still as funny as ever. I do think that they’re more light-hearted these days but that’s probably part of..dare i say it…growing up! Some of the lines in this song remind me of the first song i ever noticed on the radio by weezer way back when they released el scorcho. ‘I asked you to a greenday concert and you said you’d never heard of them so i went to your room and read your diary…’ Funny stuff. This song is ripping off being a teen at summer camp big time. ‘You told me stories about your chickadees, they don’t like bb guns or stupid archery’ I like it how they say it alongside such punchy rock guitar, it makes it seem like there’s a big distance between then and now.
