The Flaming Lips’ massive-looking 18-track Embryonic double album is out in less than two months and so far it hasn’t sprung any major leaks. We’ve heard the shuffling and busily unhinged “Convinced Of The Hex,” the dreamy, Kraut-y “Silver Trembling Hands,” and the syrupy robotics of “The Impulse” courtesy of that pre-Embryonic digital EP. Now there’s the dark, partially industrialized “See The Leaves.” It’s quite a head trip. It’s also quite good to see the guys digging into slightly bleaker psychedelia after so many spins in that giant hamster ball.

Still no sign of Karen O and MGMT?

Embryonic is out in 10/13 on Warner Bros. See you before that at Kutsher’s.

Good to see the Lips have started revisiting their past – rough, raw and urgent

  2. I don’t hear it as a revisitation of their past myself. They were never this somber or clear in the noisy, irreverent says of ‘Shine On, Sweet Jesus’. One of the many things I love about the FLips is how they began as an experimental act and over the years have toned themselves down into something that’s far more coherent but still very unique. While other bands peter out as they age, the FLips keep getting better.

This reminds me so much of “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” by Pink Floyd. “Convinced of the Hex” does to a lesser extent but incorporates a line from that veryu song “watching the watcher.” I’m really looking forward to this record.

  4. This sounds more like Can thannPink Floyd.

  5. Interesting. From what I’ve heard so far though, I hope they will bother to write some real songs as well, instead of relying only on production.
