Om’s Steve Albini-produced God Is Good is Al Cisneros’ first full-length featuring the non-Sleep Grails drummer Emil Amos, who replaced Chris Hakius last year. Judging from the instrumental lead track “Cremation Ghat II,” Amos isn’t the only new element mixed into the psychedelic bass-and-drum duo’s arsenal. The collection crystallizes a Middle Eastern-vibe detected amid the excellent stoner repetitions of past outings: This time you’ll find strings, sitars, tablas, and flutes to let you know you’re not just hearing things. Some of those flavors show up on the soft, relatively brief (in Om terms) album closer.

04 “Cremation Ghat II”

God Is Good is out 9/29 via Drag City. Al’s also busy with Wino, Scott Kelly, and Dale Crover in Shrinebuilder, whose fiery (and often kick ass) self-titled debut comes out in October via Neurot. (And at times sounds like an Om record.)

I don’t want to be pedantic about this, but what you’re hearing is not a sitar, it’s a tamboura, which is basically a drone instrument, as opposed to the sitar which is very much a lead instrument. It’s an Indian instrument, and India is not located in the Middle East, it’s in South Asia.

This is a cool song. Thanks for posting it.
