This past weekend we spent a few days in Wayne’s world, Coyne and his fellow Flamers curating what was easily the most surreal, if not simply the best, US festival of 2009. With all due respect to the Lips, that has more to do with ATP’s egalitarian and immersive experience than anything else, but still — during their set new songs were performed, and despite a rehash of the standard bubble circus, the Flaming Lips seemed reignited.
Consider the band’s onstage entrance through psychedelically undulating vaginal Lips this past weekend as their rebirth, then, a new life that gets a big push from friend to born-agains everywhere, Stephen Colbert, who hosts the Oklahoma men tonight for a performance and chat about their forthcoming, appropriately titled double-album Embryonic. (Born again, to be sure.) Stephen’s making his first foray into the album stream premiere world tonight, too (watch your back, Spinner): Immediately following the telecast, hit colbertnation.com to hear the new Lips album in its entirety. (Stephen’s repeating the feat with a Mountain Goats performance/album stream double-platter on 10/6.)
And a quick grab-bag of assorted Lips info:
The band’s releasing a video for new track “I Can Be A Frog” on 9/22, and will be regaling Oklahoma City with their third annual Ghouls Gone Wild Halloween parade (10/24) and a New Year’s Eve concert (12/31, as is the tradition). Embryonic is out 10/13, and that night they’ll stop by Conan’s place for a Tonight Show performance. The 18-track album is coming in tons of deluxe format options, including one with a suped-up DVD packaged in a “fur” box. All of that info is at flaminglips.com/embryonic.
OK. Midnight tonight, Embryonic premature evaluation party in the comments, see you then.

Yeah this is gonna be great
Indeed.
Um…I just bought a limited edition fur covered Black Moth Super Rainbow CD a few months ago. A band who opened for The Flaming Lips in the past and who’s latest album was produced by longtime ‘Lips’ producer Dave Fridmann. Coincidence? Rip-off? Or maybe fur is in this year? Sorry Wayne, you were beat to the punch on this one. Anyway, I still can’t wait to buy Embryonic.
Wait, Black Moth Super Rainbow latest album was produced by longtime ‘Lips’ producer Dave Fridmann and it completelly rips off the Lips?? I thought you were talking about MGMT, my bad.
This is all so painfully WHITE.
yeah, this is all so WHITE! i hate white people and their magical ways!!!
that’s why i stick to my afro sensibilities and only listen to Vampire weekend…
Lips are really doing fur? Surprised they aren’t doing scratch and sniff like BMSR 2 years ago. TIGHT either way!
Anyone listening to this? I really didn’t like the third song.. maybe it’s a grower.
I’m digging it. More chill than I expected.
take some drugs for this one.
My stream seems to end on The Impulse. Either that, or I’m in such a stupor at this point that I can’t count.
Either way, very fine work. There’s a lot of sound to dig through.
I love it, not that fond of the frog song, but all the rest are fantastic. Its stopping at The Impulse for me too which makes me really sad…
I have to say that this album is incredible. I have little hope for any new music that comes out anymore as my favorite bands continually disappoint, but this album has all the greatness of Pink Floydish riffs and top notch mushrooms meshed together into beautiful and mind expanding music. It reminds me of Floyd live in Pompeii! Quick Eugene, get me my ax so I can set my controls for the heart of the embryo!!! I love the album and can’t wait to purchase it as soon as it hits stores.
Very psychedelic. I like.
Stellar album. Completely agree with the psycedelic statement. Actually all the tracks are available, it’s just that the flash player is set up incomplete. There is actually a post on the FLips boards with a sendit file link that contains all the goods.

Can’t wait for this vinyl to drop so I can get my grubby hands on it!!!
arcade fire is better, no ifs ands or buts. those that disagree automatically enjoys nickelback.
apples and oranges, dude
I see what you did there. Straw man. lol.
Arcade Fire better than Flaming Lips? I must be a Nickelback fan. Anyway, their musical styles are pretty different and I don’t know how you can compare a band that started in 2003 and has 2 albums with a band that’s been around since 1983 and is still making noteworthy, relevant music. My guess is you won’t be able to say the same for Arcade Fire in 20 years.
Their live show at Pitchfork was one of the most symbolic and stimulating of the year. I have yet to see a band come forth with an intro by coming out of a digitial vagina. It’s an image I will not soon forget. Only the Lips can pull that off!
They didn’t play any of the new songs at P-fork but I’m looking forward to seeing what they got to say with the new album!
The pitchfork show was awesome, but they did play Silver Trembling Hands and Convinced Of The Hex from the new album at that show.
Am I an idiot because I can’t find this stream now; or have they taken it down?
Amongst certain people they are revered, but most people don’t know about them. It’s unfortunate because I put them up there alongside Radiohead with making some of the most excellent records of the past twenty years. By the way…Arcade Fire…you suck.
Yeah I’m spreading the hate for Arcade Fire.
do you like distorted bass?
do you like blips, blurts and squiggly noises?
do you like tuneless melodies?
then YOU’LL LOVE embryonic.
Unfortunately I kind of agree with you. I’ve been forcing myself to like it, but the songs just aren’t there.
it is very unfortunate. i’ve been trying to like it but i feel lost. it sounds incomplete.
I hear ya dudes.
I like it better than their last album though…
But I haven’t totally taken to it.
At least this one may have things to be discovered in it,
I hope it will grow after a few more listens.

I saw the Lips at ATP, a totally surreal experience. It’s impossible to walk around Kutsher’s w/o evoking The Overlook Hotel and then, the next morning, to be standing in line with Nick Cave to buy coffee from 3 little old Jewish ladies in a gift shop because the kosher kitchen can’t open and Kliph and Steven walk by in heated discussion with Jim Jarmusch is just weird. The Lips show was fantastic, vaginal entrance, bubblewalk, new songs and all. Already prepaid for new album.
This is amazing music. I can’t believe it is all created just down the street from me.
