Whoops, looks like two cultures just got shocked. Obviously that headline is a joke! Except that maybe it isn’t? Rumors had been swirling about Thom Yorke and Bon Iver penning songs for the The Twilight Saga: Teen Vampires In Love Some More soundtrack, and those rumors are confirmed with today’s OST tracklist, exclusively revealed by MySpace. But you already knew that because MySpace is your homepage. And hey, this thing looks good, like mini-Dark Was The Night good.
In addition to Thom’s new tune “Hearing Damage,” and Bon Iver’s duet with St. Vincent’s face on a song called “Rosyln,” Twilight scored previously unreleased tracks from Grizzly Bear and the Killers. Atlantic, in conjunction with soundtrack curator Alexandra Patsavas’s Chop Shop, will release the album, and so there’s a correlatively strong showing of Atlantic-affiliated artists (Death Cab, Lykke Li, and Muse, the lone holdover from the first film’s OST) and a Patsavas pet (her Chop Shop puts out Anya Marina who made the cut). You’ve heard Death Cab’s “Meet Me On The Equinox.” Here’s a few more reasons you suddenly love vampires:

Well, this is the beginning of the end for indie rock, the official pop culture peak… the soundtracked will be loathed by critics and bash the artist for this move which will be considered a way to earn money and fame by appearing on such teen friendly movie…what band will be able to turn to?
I actually agree with you. This is the point where indie-rock music took a wrong turn. It actually feels just right seeing that the music industry is non-existant & we are nearing the end of what has been a sad decade in music. Looking forward to Grizzly Bear shows being hella-crowded with vampire-inspired eyeliner emo fat chicks. With that being said, can anyone point me to where the the new NEW-underground scene will be located?

Point you to where the new NEW-underground scene will be? So, you are saying the “scene” is more important than the music being made? Don’t you want the musicians you love to be successful at what they do? Oh wait, you love the “scene”, not the musicians or the music being made. Oh, such a sad state, Pitchfork nation.
Think of it like this: The “scene” is like a ship where every indie-rock band is currently on. The ship is currently getting crowded with more exposure than what it’s been used to. As everyone know by now, too much exposure does nothing but distract bands from the most integral part of their own existence: the music. Success can only be measured in the number of loyal fans that follow the them wherever they choose to go with their music. An overcrowded ship will sink while taking everything else down with it. There will always be an anti-establishment to whatever is currently being regarded as popular and/or trendy. The next “scene” ,”ship” (or..whatever you call it) might already exist but we must be careful not to settle with what’s currently popular (vampire-movie in this case) because this only lowers our own musical-standards to dangerous levels. We still yet to see the effects the Bush-era has had on all these up-and-coming bands. To sum it up.. some of us are still waiting the next Nirvana.

I see what your saying… do you think it is possible for a band to have the impact a Nirvana had in the early 90′s? Society and culture have changed so much, can one band (or really, one legendary figure) do what Kurt Cobain did given the time we live in?

Whoa there Markop. Perhaps it’s time for you to check out a little bit of Sea Wolf, because they are one of the better bands on this list. Start with something like the song “You’re a Wolf”, and then try some of their new songs “Stanislaus” and “Wicked Blood”.

Alright folks, lets not get our American Apparel tightie undies in a bunch now. Its just a well-crafted soundtrack that obviously is targeted at a niche market in indie music fans because, lets be honest: Indie music fans are an easy market right now and probably the only ones who will probably buy a compilation of some exclusive DCFC, Thom York, Bon Iver, etc. tracks.
The thing is you shouldn’t buy this soundtrack because it has all your favorite bands, and look at how this is just a money making grab for the Twilight brand. I say download the thing off a P2P or bit-torrent and show those stereotyping Twilight pricks that they definitely underestimated its target audience. Burn it to a CD if you have to, if physical copies are your thing. I say this as someone who does buy albums all the time, but I hate when music like this is exploited for commercial purposes. This isn’t Dark Was the Night… At least the money there went to charity. I’m sure Mr. Yorke already got a nice paycheck for his contribution whether or not we buy this thing.

I’m not typically bothered by the “commercialization of indie rock” or bands selling out or any of that bullshit, but this is just ridiculous. Soundtracks are wonderful because they pair two art forms in a way where each informs the other. To pair actually talented artists making complicated and progressive music with a shitty money-scheme like Twilight is to drag the names of these bands through the mud, in my opinion.
While I mostly agree with you, these artists aren’t helpless – I blame them as much as anyone else involved with this abomination. Any taint or consequence brought on the artists by this project is well-deserved, although they’re probably not gonna hate it (unless they hate money)
This is hilarious. What is shows me is that major labels are desperate for cash and are ditching old techniques by reaching out talented ‘indie’ acts for help. I think it’s great. It’ll be interesting to see who actually tours Hot Topic stores b/c it certainly won’t be Thom, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver or the like. Much of the time, some songs that appear on soundtracks aren’t even in the movie.

I think that ‘Hearing Damage’ evolved out of ‘Everything in it’s Right Place’. I remember reading early lyrics of the latter which included that subject matter.
I thought St. Vincent and Grizzly Bear were safe from the tweens. This is a sad day indeed. But hey, at least they get good money! And on second thought…Annie Clark does look a little like a vampire.

Its 10 times more disgusting that a fan wouldn’t relish the opportunity to hear NEW music from a band because its associated with a blockbuster movie series, as opposed to a new fan being created by its association with said blockbuster movie series.
What this tells me is that you’re probably not a real fan of the music and just a scene hopping pretender if that’s the case.
Here’s an economic lesson for you all. If a successful author approaches you with an opportunity of creative freedom to contribute one track on an album that will likely top the 2 million in worldwide sales mark, you take that opportunity. If anything, for the royalties alone. Among the fifteen bands, that still equates to 133,000 album sales per artist, which I guarantee most of these guys don’t come close to sniffing in a typical album release.
Selling out? That’s so ridiculous. Hell, this can afford that band the time and money to craft another stellar album without the pressure involved in constantly touring to generate income as is the norm and demise of a lot of YOUR favorite bands these days.
If anything, you should actually be heralding hollywood on this move in that they’re trying to produce ORIGINAL content for this movie as opposed to including another version of “A Time To Pretend” in their movie.
Hopefully this will become a trend. Hopefully this will be another revenue stream that can actually make smaller sized musicians be able to provide their fans with entertainment.
I don’t think it’s a question of “selling out” or caring that pre-teens are listening to the same music as the 20-something crowd (I personally, could care less). It has to do with equating ‘good’ music with an awful franchise that exists only to suck money out of the parents of said delusional pre-teens. It’s worse than putting art on the same level as kitsch. It’s like equating a Dalà or Picasso piece to dog shit.
I’d much prefer to see a badly acted takeoff on Dark Shadows set to two dudes singing about shooting heroin and pretending to have models for wives over BRMC any day of the week. At least then I’d know someone involved has a sense of humor about how terrible it all is.
I couldn’t agree with Tuddle more! especially about this being a way for these bands to buy time without having to tour to make MORE GREAT ALBUMS. Give these bands a break. Anyone over the age of 21 knows you gotta work. the less hours you have to put in doing a job, which something like this is, the more time you have to do what you really want, i.e. make great albums. it seems to me that the wonderful people over at twilight central have no idea. the first movie is shit. an angsty teenage romance which doesn’t do justice to the music that’s been put with it. same with this one too. grizzly bear and bon iver are quality – the twilight ‘saga’ isn’t.

Well, it’s pure marketing ploy. They realize that most people when watching a movie don’t give a flying rat’s ass what’s playing behind the characters. And they realize that every indie music aficionado will be at least buying singles from the record on iTunes, along with all the people who are the kind of people to buy soundtrack albums. Plus, as an artist, why wouldn’t you turn down an opportunity to be involved in any movie saga, good or bad?

Seriously, the Twilight series is not the right place for bands like Grizzly Bear or St. Vincent; here come more kids becoming indie just cause they think it’s the cool thing right now.

Why begrudge a bunch of great bands a chance for some really wide exposure as well as good money? Its not the 70′s and selling out isn’t what it used to be. Commercials, movies, tv are great ways for bands to get their music out and collect royalties for their music. And if Chop Shop is helping the wider population discover good music, what’s wrong with that?

I for one am happy that these bands will get to be head by a whole new market. Now maybe my 11 year old son won’t just roll his eyes when i play BRMC, Radiohead etc in the car. When I was young soundtracks and compilations exposed me to so much, I remember hearing the Pixies and Leonard Cohen thanks to Pump Up the Volume (terrible movie but good soundtrack) Some of these bands deserve a little mainstream attention , if I wanted to be in a private members only club I would of remained in the “punk” genre of my teenage years.

I generally avoid Stereogum because while I like indie music, I’m also fond of mainstream stuff, so I feel a little sidelined. I’ll add to this discussion, though, because as a “punk” enthusiast, I’ve always been against the concept of selling-out. People gotta get paid, but… I disagree with everything that Twilight stands for and it honestly depresses me to see these artists on here.
And by the punk part, I mean I love punk music but I think people who listen to it get wound up about stupid stuff. But Twilight’s so sexist and stupid…and ugh.
I will agree that Twilight is bad, but compared to other mainstream crap is it the worst message being put forth? The objectification of young girls and women that passes for acceptable entertainment upsets me far more then the sexism within Twilight. I have to pick and choose my battles about popular culture at least Twilight is no MTV reality show.
Not in reference to langford or any specifically it is my belief that a number of music fans enjoy the obscurity of “their” bands, it makes them feel unique when only a couple people in their school or work place “get” how good their music is. To see their faves put on a mainstream stage (Twilight soundtrack) means more party crashes that don’t “get” how unique and stylish their music is.
Maybe I have just become hardened growing up in the late eighties seeing Green Day and Look Out Records go from a private club to mainstream success, seeing the Misfits logo of my tween years become as big of a cheesy marketing prop as Che Guevara’s image.

I think these are some of the greatest artists…so I am excited. I read all of the books (and I am not a teeny-bopper) and like the movies… I think it is cool to expose more people to good music…

The soundtrack isn’t miles more “indie” than the last one. All these bands are pretty accessible. Alexandra Patsavas isn’t tossing No Age or Vivian Girls at you. I also bet that, however good the songs end up being (Death Cab’s song is terrific for now), they will be overdone for thematic purposes.
We were all awkward tweens at one point. Let’s not forget that. I wish the inferior tastes of my 13 year old self would have been influenced by something this good.

The thing is, I want people/young kids to discover these bands……but just NOT THROUGH TWILIGHT. Really, I would just prefer a more sophisticated channel for discovering them and and so that they wouldn`t always associate these bands with Twilight. I was a bit pissed that some people only knew about Muse because of Twilight…that will continue.
You know how when a couple divorces, lets say the wife decides to marry someone who is her husband`s sworn enemy. Then the husband will say something like ” Look I`m ok with you remarrying, just NOT him.” That`s kinda like how we are, we`re the ex-husband, the bands are are our ex-wife and Twilight is the sworn enemy. At least Garden State had a little bit of charm and when Zach Braff’s character looks at Natalie Portman with her headphones listening to The Shins, that’s a great moment where music makes the scene more special.
I, for one, don’t see that sort of thing happening with this movie. And it’s not like any of these artists are unknowns who are scrapping the end of the barrel for food. This is a good chunk of the current indie crème de la crop.
Not against having great music getting exposure through a film but this might as well be Iron Man 2. Blah.

I honestly don’t care about goth tweens listening to good bands just because of Twilight, instead of actually liking the music. It’s retarded, but who gives a fuck?
The only thing that bothers me is that fact that at shows I’m now going to have to contend with (in addition to hipster douche nozzles who only go there to be seen in their new American Apparel garb and end up talking through the whole thing) 13 year old girls who are only waiting for tHe tWiLigHt SoNg to be played so that they can jump up and down and cry and think about sexy vampires.
Otherwise, Twilight can shove whatever they want down their gullets and it doesn’t matter.
I think the reason people are so peeved, is tat their fav. bands are pormoted and sold in a way that they pretend to be above selling out for cash, but obv. that isn’t true

i don’t get it, i mean people are freaking out about this. can people really start hating superduper bands just because one of their songs is in an AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL movie?? it’s about the music,man not what movie the song is in.
on the other hand, this could end up with a bunch of vampire lovers taking up room at concerts because they heard one good song by them in an AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL movie that they worship. but still lets not hate the bands.
when i was eleven and i discovered radiohead, it was epic because i definitely remember raiding my brother’s music collection and stealing Kid A when no one was home. i could care less whether the young ones are exposed to great music; it’s better that way. however, this is a blatant marketing ploy, no different than 500 days of summer, specifically aimed to squeeze the little american apparel emblem-ed pockets of hipsters dry. but what makes it so cringe-worthy is the fact that all these great bands are being thrown at these kids; they’re not actually discovering the music for themselves and finding out what type of person they want to be on their own.
i’d rather see little kids dancing to Bon Iver on Yo Gabba Gabba! (where at least they’re being properly schooled) rather than equating these great era-defining bands to trash (that won’t even be remembered past this decade) like twilight. it’s like giving someone a five-course meal on a fucking toilet lid.

Okay, here’s my thing: I don’t mind indie bands being successful. I mind when they taste success and then decide they need to change their sound to chase further success. Because then they become the Kings of Leon, jettisoning anything interesting about their sound to be another bland band with aspirations of being U2. I don’t think we need another Kings of Leon. They’ve finished their transformation into late ’00s Creed. To see another good band follow that career trajectory would be painful. And things like this lead to that.
i keep getting shi*t from my friends because grizzly bear and bon iver and stuff are on the new twilight soundtrack, personally i don’t care, but it is annoying
People have to start liking bands somehow. How many people liked Radiohead before you did? I’m guessing that most of you are in your early 20s and were still in preschool when I was listening to Radiohead. This is how I felt when the Clueless and Romeo & Juliet soundtracks came out. But I got over it. If you don’t want to run into preteen pseudo-vampires at indie shows then don’t go to indie shows. Who cares if they’re there?!?? I didn’t complain when you guys started going to Radiohead shows. I went and enjoyed the band because I loved their music. I ended up working in the music industry for several years, but was laid-off because people started pirating music off the internet (you know who you are). So I teach now. I would be THRILLED if my 5th graders were listening to Bon Iver. I’m sick of hearing them talk about Hannah Montana and Selena Gomez. I’d much rather them talk about Lykke Li or Sea Wolf. I think this soundtrack is a good idea. Expose the kids to some good music for a change.
Having Vampire Weekend would have been the best thing for this playlist, because all these tweens think they’ll likely get this gothy type music and then something like “M79″ would play and scare the shit out of them.

it is way too early to pass judgement on this: we will have to wait and see what the effects are. certainly, nobody can object to bon iver or grizzly seeing a bit of cash; all the more power to them. the only question is, what will the implications for the indie “community” (or w/e) be? this could mean a new generation of dedicated indie fans; it could mean that a bunch of abercrombie girls will drag their bro boyfriends to the bon iver show and i’ll get my ass kicked a lot more often. wait and see.
