Is it possible to continue to listen to Animal Collective without agreeing with the PETA campaign against seal hunting in Canada? I sure hope so, because I love Animal Collective but I also think there is a whole lot misinformation circulating about that seal hunt. But of course, I’m not allowed to say this, or else someone’s going to accuse me of being racist (which makes a lot of sense, I must admit.)
Well, I must admit I don’t know much about the seal hunt (basically just that I don’t like seeing seals get bludgeoned to death), but as a Canadian, I’ve heard a lot of compelling arguments to preserve it, in the sense that it’s an important part of aboriginal culture, and that to abolish the seal hunt would in some way force certain aboriginal peoples to assimilate and abandon a part of what little tradition they have left. Plus, in certain areas, it’s how a lot of them make a living. In any case, I’m still really unsure of certain facts, but I sure would like to find a more reliable source than Wikipedia to find out more. I’m certainly not going to go to PETA for an objective view on the issue…
Yeah killing baby seals is illegal, and killing the adults is part of a cultural practice important to the Inuits, as well as serving as a very important means of financial gain. I mean I recognize wanting to preserve animals but I think it’s also important to preserve cultural identity, especially of groups who get shafted a lot. It seems to be really difficult for people in certain positions to understand that it’s not a matter of some big corporation taking advantage of resources, it’s something else entirely.

Animal Collective is dismal at the very best and should keep a low-profile before the secret gets out. The seal hunt is a tiny industry that takes an unfair amount of shit because they don’t have the kind of political/PR sway as hundreds of other, more offensive industries. Including the Olympics themselves.

While seals have never been an endangered specie, hunting quotas were still lowered causing the seal population to increase significantly from around 1.8 million in the 70s to almost 6 millions since the late 90s. This can be devastating for their environment.
In 2007 Raoul Jomphe was filming a documentary on seal hunt and Rebecca Aldworth firmly opposed to it’s release because it was showing the crew of HSUS pulling out of the water a wounded seal trying to escape that they were taking footage of for like 45 minutes trying to make their point about how horrible it is to kill animals until a hunter just came and ended it’s suffering! how sick?!

This is awesome. I love PETA, but I hate how they usually get a lot of support from shitty, untalented Warped Tour bands, like Underoath and Sum 41, yuck. I’m glad they got Animal Collective behind them. Good job PETA, and thanks for helping out critters.

Sufjan could get away with this. I’m not seeing what the huge problem is. Maybe I’m a wimp or something, but seeing a baby seal beaten to death is a horrid thing, no matter what kind of justification you can provide. Necessary, maybe, horrid, absolutely.
the problem is they don’t know what they are supporting or standing against. Baby seals are not slauthered. Adults are killled. Hunting is normal and seals are not an endangered specie. Pandas are or Whales, not seals.
It’s easy to stand against this because cruelty done to animals or people is unacceptable, but nobody goes about killing baby seals just for the pleasure of looking at it die! There are better causes out there to stand for.
oh and I’m glad to see you are all vegetarians because if you were to eat meat you would know it’s being killed before it is cooked…

i love animal collective, they were amazind in dublin last year, and although i dont know much about the subject, i dont see any reason to continue killing seals for clothes, there are many other types of materials that could be used.
Personallly, I think that killing animals at all should be illegal unless you plan to eat it. I suppose then AND only then, it is okay to use the fur or hide or whatever for clothes, as a byproduct I see it as not only ethical, but respectful to the animal whose life was taken. Hundreds of years ago, that was the only way to get clothing for some people, but the way the world is today, it is just wrong to kill an animal for the sole purpose of using it for clothing material when there are so many suitable alternatives available. I’m not a huge fan of Peta, and I really wish I didn’t have to be subjected to that nice video clip at the end there, but cruelty to animals to me just seems really fucked.

Peta is pointless. I mean seriously, a group that is overprotective to animals. Focus on saving people dammit. You can be against over cruelty to animals (cruelty that is just mean), but don’t try to force people to be something they are not. We need to kill animals to live or else our world would be FUCKED. Think back to how the food chain that we all learned in 4th grade science works and you will understand that. Peta just sucks.
It seems like the Animals don’t even want to be there, except for maybe Geologist (who cares about him anyway). I think his new wife pussy-whipped him into doing this or something. Panda’s only comment seemed like something someone would say if they were backing their friend a topic that they didn’t really care about. And Avey, obviously found it funny. He cracked up at the beginning when he said he was there for peta, and then he had the same reaction as me after that video of the seal getting decapitated was shown. He cracked up like he found violent seal killing hilarious. That just makes me like him more though, because I had the same reaction. I know it’s bad, but greatly amusing.
