When posting “Imagine, Pt. 3,” we noted that Smith Westerns had been touring the country and surprising everyone with how young they were. By CMJ week it was no longer a surprise: not to the packed rooms that ate up the awesomely fuzzed and tuneful “Shit-cago, IL” (their words) Bolan/Glitter-loving outfit, and apparently not to the Music Hall Of Williamsburg staff, who had to eject them for drinking grown-up beverages. Last night they were at Lincoln Hall for a show at their sweet home, Shitcago. On the bill was seemingly everyone’s favorite of the chillwave stream, Neon Indian, joined on keys by fellow Texan Leanne Macomber of BTW Fight Bite, and early opener Prairie Cartel. Photographer Kirstie Shanley and her camera are responsible for this set of shots.

I’m pretty sure this show was at Lincoln Hall, not The Empty Bottle.
Yeah, the show was at the new Lincoln Hall.
Oops, fixed.
neon indian >smith westerns
I’m not sure how true it is that they got kicked out…I was at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and they were drinking while on stage and were reprimanded for it multiple times, but then the bassist and the lead singer at the very least stayed and watched the rest of the show. I was standing right next to them and they were just standing there. I mean maybe I missed something, but I stayed until the showcase was over and definitely saw them still there. but maybe i’m just dumb!
smith westerns > neon indian.
saw these guys in cleveland in august and they killed it. looks like they’re moving up the ranks quickly. nice photo collection also.
Copy editor dork in me wants to point out that you misspelled “Prairie.”
So, the smith westerns are kind of assholes, and it was really funny because people kept yelling to the lead singer(who is an asshole, and I’m friends with people he went to high school with), “You look like Joe Jonas! Are you a jonas brother?” LOL and I don’t think he liked it considering he’s SUCH a modern punk!!! This is a band who has decent songs, but really only we’re at the right place at the right time, and just took advantage at the right time of the lo-fi craze of late.
K, I’ll admit, the lead guitarist is pretty cool, with his crazy moves while playin’
Is the guitar player in that first picture playing a left-handed guitar right-handed and flipped upside down? Or am I losing my mind?
my thoughts exactly. he went through the trouble of getting a left-handed guitar, in order to play it upside down and right-handed. it’s a reverse jimi hendrix…or mirror or something…crazy kids on drugs.
umm… they sucked… neon indian rocked though.
