The reunited Pixes kicked off their nine city US tour — the one where they play Doolittle cover to cover — in Los Angeles earlier this week. The band’s celebrating a lot, from the 20th anniversary of that classic LP to the release of the physically massive Minotaur boxed set (not so much a coffee table decoration as a coffee table), in various ways this week. You can download a free live EP culled from the band’s show in Paris last month, or you could watch this clip of “Here Comes Your Man” for the Tonight Show audience. Frank Black spoke to Minotaur‘s size, but you get some real perspective when it still looks tremendous sitting under Conan’s ample cranium.

Here are Pixies’ remaining US dates:
11/09 – Oakland, CA @ Fox Theater
11/12 – Seattle, WA @ Paramount Theatre
11/13 – Seattle, WA @ Paramount Theatre
11/14 – Eugene, OR @ Hult Center
11/16 – Denver, CO @ The Fillmore,
11/20 – Chicago, IL @ Aragon Ballroom
11/21 – Chicago, IL @ Aragon Ballroom
11/23 – New York, NY @ Hammerstein Ballroom
11/24 – New York, NY @ Hammerstein Ballroom
11/25 – New York, NY @ Hammerstein Ballroom
11/27 – Boston, MA @ Wang Center
11/30 – Washington, D.C. @ Constitution Hall

  1. I liked this song a lot on Conan. Why did it sound so familiar though? Is it new?

to be such a straight up pop song and still seem so arty somehow…the definition of the best “power pop”…for me…

  3. Does no one else find this a disappointment? Totally underwhelming and lifeless…

    • I’m with you there. I’d contemplating getting tickets to the tour. Glad I didn’t after seeing this. Great song, but totally bland delivery.

THIS performance was a bit lack luster. the tour, however, was shmashazing!! i just saw them last night in oakland and was floored. trust!

  4. One of the highlights when I saw them in Glasgow recently was the lovely little film they played in the background during Here Comes Your Man. Since I’m not in the US I can’t see the hulu vid so I’ll just presume they don’t have it on the Conan show. Normally, I don’t tend to pay much attention to backdrop projections at gigs but this one was just some nice footage of each member as they listened to the song – singing along at bits, dancing, making funny faces. There’s probably a youtube video of it but since YouTube is down right now you’ll have to make do with my insufficient explanation. This lack of archive multimedia proof is like living in the ’89 or something.

They were MUCH better when I saw them at the Palladium on Wednesday night.

You’re missing the 2nd 12/1 show at DAR in DC…or I hope you are, cause I have tickets. I’m also a (tiny) bit underwhelmed by this, but hopefully after a few weeks playing basically the same set they’ll be comfortable enough to stretch out and play loose. Hard to conjure the magic for a single song in front of a small studio audience who didn’t show up to see you play…I hope.

conan needs a new sound engineer. say what you will about julian casablancas and/or the pixies, but neither of them has ever sounded as lifeless as they do on these late night performances. gotta think it has something to do with the quiet, brittle mix on stage. give the dudes a little volume!! perhaps conan should bring back whoever was sliding the faders for this ATDI performance: http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=1119406

They had just played an awesome show at the Los Angeles Palladium, so I can see why they wouldn’t be as excited to be playing at the Tonight Show.

  11. Frank? is that you in Bono’s rose tinted glasses?
