Grab your Revolutionary War garb, Coldplay’s “holed up in a dilapidated north London church” working on a new album for release next year. Brian Eno’s back, but to avoid being a “huge stadium act” (?), they’re going in “a stripped-down, more acoustic” direction. More at the Sun (Via WAWSTSF).

What’s with bands recording in churches? New trend? or is there an noticeable difference in the recordings when inside of a church? Besides the obvious blessing of the lord, of course.

I’d say the natural reverberation capabilities when recording (although in many recording instances, you’d want as dead-sounding surrounding as possible), clear space, and aesthitics/vibe/inspiration are the main factors…and in some cases not including Coldplay, cheap studio time.
Oh, and it makes people think you’re cooler than if you record in a real studio.

    • Churches were usually designed with acoustics in mind, something thats been neglected in a lot of modern architecture (although you would imagine studios would be an exception). They tend to be able to offer some amazing natural reverb. Plus with the decline of people going to them for conventional reasons they are getting easier to find and rent (or squat in)

  2. Stripped-down as in more Parachutes-like? I’d take some of that.

I hear they’re going to call the new album “Boogie-boarding with the Extra-Terrestrial”.

You beat me to it d33r. They’re cringe worth now, but it would be great to hear something like the 1st album.

Parachutes was ok, but you have to admit- trite, elementary lyrics and not a lot of variety. “Yellow” is probably one of the most annoying and brainless songs of that year.

Rush of Blood was their best as far as crafting original, powerful tunes and the songs varied nicely from one to the next.

Everything after that album pretty much blew.
