“Jail La La” isn’t a new Dum Dum Girls song, but it has been re-recorded and given the Richard Gottehrer treatment for Dee Dee & Co’s excellent forthcoming Sub Pop debut I Will Be. (It’s also available on a single backed by “Over The Phone.”) The new collection’s sound is dusky and the group (Dee Dee + Frankie Rose, Jules, and Bambi) still nods equally to noise poppers and girl groups, but things shine a bit brighter across its 11 tracks. The polish makes sense considering the band’s increasingly tight live shows. Take a listen.

I Will Be is out 3/30 via Sub Pop/HoZac. Nick Zinner plays on “Yours Alone.” Crocodiles’ Brandon Welchez sings/plays guitar on a new version of “Blank Girl.” The collection opens with an updated version of “It Only Takes One Nite.” Etc. While you’re thinking about DDG’s don’t forget about fairly recent non-album track “Let It Be Me.” And remember walkin’ in the sand:

None of those names are real.
Bambi? Give me a break. So put on.
Also “Dee Dee’s” tights probably stink like pussy. I’ve never seen a photo of her without them.

I’ve see the Dum Dum Girls with this line-up in-person, and it’s the real-deal. Sure there’s some fake names, but that’s rock n’ roll. Go bark up Jack White’s tree if that’s your biggest beef. These girls play really solid, and Kristin knows how to write great hooks, and her voice speaks for itself. I will confess though, this new version lacks some of the charm the original has. The drums should’ve stayed buried, and the vocals are bit too high in this mix. Regardless, I can’t wait to hear the whole album. DDG will definitely dominate based on their live-show alone.

  7. the vocals are high? i can’t even understand half the lyrics. what is the chorus anyways?

  8. The first photo seems like they’re trying to copy VP’s Contra.
But I’m sure whenever someone uses a blurry amateur photo of a girl people are going to claim they’re copying.
I mean, I just did it.

if their live show is so real deal why did dee dee decide to rerecord her old songs without them?
it sounds so much shittier, which i didnt know was possible. garage band chic is so last year.
