We leave you today with a highly melodic, ultra-bearded peak inside the mind of of Montreal mainbrain Kevin Barnes, who today tweeted a link to a vid featuring a song he’s calling “Enemy Gene.” It’s a little less loopy and certainly less realized than the similarly home-made clip of new stuff he showed off in his Progress Report, but no less promising. The lyrics are playing with metaphors on a genetic level, hoping for Darwinism in his heart’s evolution, winding up feeling like a dodo instead. Pertinent questions:

“How can I trust my fractious heart knowing that I have the enemy gene?” and “How can we ever evolve when our Gods are so primitive?” The Beatles shine through the curves of this progression in that E6 way, more apparent because it’s nothing but Kevin and his piano, maybe, but its roots are showing. Not that this tune needs adorning, but half the fun is going to be seeing how it mutates once it’s spun around that home studio. Listen, and beware of beard:

So pretty. And yet so highly chromosomal. The tentatively titled False Priest is expected in August or September, with Jon Brion getting an engineering credit. Probably, I mean, Kevin and Jon are at work figuring that part out. Lots more tidbits from Mr. Barnes on the new album right here.

Theres the verson where Brian is previewing Surfs Up on TV…It’s my favorite version…

  2. It would be amazing if the album version sounded like this, but alas, there’s nearly no chance of that happening…

    • This is amazing, and i’m hoping that this is how it will sound because this is how it should be. Jon Brion a genius at putting sound together and i really hope it gives the edge that this deserves. I’m starting to think that Of Montreal are maturing in the fact that the glam look might be getting old to them, and its time to make this kind of music, either way its great

        blah blah blah

      • Kevin has promised this album will actually be MORE funky than the last two. Even if the final version of this song does end up sounding like this preview version, I suspect the rest of the album won’t–remember “Touched Something’s Hollow” off of “Skeletal Lamping”? He’s also released “Feminine Effects” in recent years, which is another acoustic piano ballad.

Regardless, I totally trust Kevin’s judgment, whether or not Jon Brion produces the album (Kevin has stated that he is currently working with Brion, but if he doesn’t like how these sessions end up sounding, he may just scrap them and produce the album himself like he’s always done).

It’s been stated that the title is either going to be False Priest or Controller Sphere, yeah.
