Brooklyn duo Acrylics are in that early phase of their career where knowing how and when to package the tracks they’ve recorded is tricky business. EP, LP, 7″, digital download, questions questions blog-world questions. Regardless of how and where they go from here, their first step was a strong one: All Of The Fire, a five-track EP both produced and released by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, via his label with Ethan Silverman, Terrible Records. “Molly’s Vertigo” does not appear on the tracklist — actually this song’s web presence predates the favorable chatter around their debut EP’s title track. But this is their first video, so that is weird, but whatever. Where “All Of The Fire” hit the ’70s from the Fleetwood Mac side of things, the catchy “Molly’s Vertigo” teases the more glossy, slightly disco side of the decade. Cue a Brendan Harman and Weird Days-directed video with era-appropriate soft filters and fantastically cheesed out visual effects/hammy acting to match. Molly’s the singer, and the song is called “Molly’s Vertigo.” She’s singing about calling you on the phone, and so she will make a show of holding up the phone. It’s not all an outright joke — this is a good song that wears its costume well — but there’s a wink and a nudge about it, say in Jason and Molly’s silly dancing. The self-awareness here is the key — it’s amusing, but also assuring that they know where they’re coming from, and one would hope, where they’re going.

Is this video intentionally skipping at around the time of the first chorus? 55 seconds in, then again at 1:16…it happens every time for me…weird edits.
