CMJ 2004 Wrap-Up

We're finally done with the rock and roll hangover known as CMJ. For four nights, every cool venue in the city was filled with hipster college kids dying for VICE internships. but Stereogum managed to sneak in to a few noteworthy gigs.

Some highlights, along with newly-uploaded shitty photos and MP3 links...

ARCADE FIRE
Read my rave review here. If that's not good enough for you, NY Times reviews here. They'll be back in the city next month. Get yr tix!

Download: The Arcade Fire - "Neighborhood #3" (Power Out)

JOSEPH ARTHUR
The gifted singer-songwriter did an early evening set at Living Room on Friday (thanks Chip for the heads up). Joseph could teach Mr. Barlow a thing or twelve about proper use of that loop pedal. Best part: a crunchy, slowed-down cover of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" (that I will try to track down for you).

Download: Joseph Arthur - "Can't Exist"

HELIO SEQUENCE
I only caught the end of their set, but I really enjoyed it. The last song sort of reminded me of the Police. Check out their official site for more.

Download: Helio Sequence - "Everyone Knows Everyone"

SUFJAN STEVENS
Dressed like swans, Sufjan and Co. had the hippie girls in tears at the Asthmatic Kitty showcase. I should also mention his super hott xylo player/backup vocalist. She looks like Josie Pussycat in the pic I took. If you're not averse to wussy folk, pick up Seven Swans, certain to make my Top 10 CDs Of 2004 list. He'll be playing NY next month too.

Download: Sufjan Stevens - "Sister"

LOW
Low's Saturday after-midnight show at Mercury (I need a Mercury break ... I was there four nights in a row) was more rockin' than I expected, and drew heavily from The Great Destroyer, out on Sub Pop in January. Marcus said they did "Dinosaur Act" when I stepped out for some air. Sucks for me. Sort of regretting not going to Twilight Singers at Irving instead.

Download: Low - "Sunflower"

If your not all concerted-out, tonight the show to see is psych-rock throwbacks Dungen, 8pm at Other Music. It's free, so get there mad early. Nick says they're "reeeeeeeeal Sweedish."

Download: Dungen - "Ta Det Lugnt"

Finally, KEXP hosted some cool live events during CMJ, and you can stream them here.

TV on the Radio--restored my faith in many things, most notably, working in the music industry!

Of course, the betterPropaganda/File 13/Flameshovel Showcase was my personal highlight! But seriously, the Silent League is amazing, Chin Up Chin Up and Old Canes, the Poison Arrows--all awesome. On a more unbiased note, this random band called the Duke Spirit ended up playing late night after the Silent League (sneaky SOBs, didn't register with CMJ)--unbelieveable. They have an amazing energy and their sound is cool-sorta young british Blondie. They'll no doubt be getting mucho press soon!

Any of you that miss the opportunity to see Dungen live should be beat with three large sticks. I, for one, am green with envy.

Er, um, I don't believe they did Dinosaur Act. I was just singing it on the street at the time. 'Lordy' rocked the house though.

Hey! The Fall at Northsix on Firday were great but the crowd suxx'd. IQU on Thursday were pretty bad as it looks like they've shed their drummer & they sounded lost and anemic.

I would like to say that while trying to gain entrance to the Sufjan Stevens show, they told us they took all the badges they were going to take and my friend Chris got into a fight with the people at the door. Whoo us.

Also, I meant to tell you that you should've come to see Regina Spektor on Saturday night. Seriously. I've been trying to get you into her for months, I think I've mentioned her before?

If not, get the CD. Now. I could even send you a copy if you wanted.

I just bought the Sujan Stevens album on the strength of just how hot the chick is! Sad, maybe? but, its all exposure!

Speaking of the Poison Arrows - Their new EP 'Straight into the Drift' is coming out March 20 ('07). The band features Justin Sinkovich from Atombombpocketknife. Their upcoming show date is 4/2, which is their CD Release party in Chicago @ The Empty Bottle with Sterling and Che Arthur. I've heard they don't tour much so consider this your early warning.

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen
