Since U Been Blogged

Kelly Clarkson recalls the evolution of her latest hit ... and breaks Stereogum's heart. Nicholas Fonseca reports:

EW 4/1/05
"I hated [the demo]," she says. "It sounded very generic. It didn't have hardly any git-tars on it. I need more drums. I needed it be harder." Eschewing her label RCA's wishes, she hooked up with producer Max Matin and co-writer Lukasz Gottwald in Sweden to "ruin the song," and returned with the driving track that's become her current hit. Even hard-to-please rock snobs are embracing the anthem's addictive hook and tween mosh-pit vibe on their blogs. "I"ve now listened to this goddamned Kelly Clarkson song 41 times since last Wednesday," writes one convert; Mike Doughty of the defunct alt-rock quartet Soul Coughing recently called it one of his three top MP3s, and even indie-rock hero Ted Leo has recorded a much sought-after acoustic version that became a Web phenom.

Informed of the hoopla, Clarkson responds: "What's a blog?"

we requested the cover at ted leo's last show in prague a few weeks ago, but he seemed rather embarrassed and even said something akin to 'any americans that want to make a request for a song have to request it in czech'. so we translated it (nice try ted) but still no dice! hasn't played the song in ages, so he says. boo.

I like Ted Leo’s cover but I think many people have lost the jab that he is making at the Kelly Clarkson track that takes a hook directly out of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’s wonderfully raw song Maps... and I like that Ted inserted the Map’s chorus as a bridge into his version of “Since you’ve been gone” to point that out. Not that I don't like the Clarkson, it is a polished pleasure but when I first heard it my stomach twisted a bit when they stole the Maps guitar hook. The song was quite fine without the producers grabbing a primary hook out of another bands song.

Hello,

I agree with Kelly Clarkson's recent remarks on her weight and she wishes she could look like Britney Spears.
People like Britney and Kournikova are born that way. Now i'm not saying that they don't workout or exercise, millions of us do, it's nothing new, especially for young people. But as Kelly said that is not her and she is "real". Understandable as well. She is just fat and lazy! born that way as are beautiful people and she will continue to get fatter as she ages and especially if she has kids. Sounds like she has a poor insecure image of herself and masks it being eathing.

Thanks, Tom R.

I can't believe you would say something so mean, rex. First of all, Kelly Clarkson is not fat. I saw her in concert and she's absolutely gorgeous. Just because someone is curvy, that does not make them fat.

Yeah, really...my gosh- do you realize how it sounds, talking about celebrities like you know what their problems are and what they should be doing? Everyone makes judgements, especially about people so famous and present in our lives; sure- but, come on. ANYONE who gets up in the spotlight will have a million things "wrong" with them pointed out by the screaming public who are only looking for someone who fits in their cookie-cutter "perfect" person. Look out for your own self before you go calling someone you don't know at all lazy and fat. (Those celebrities who are absolutely rail-thin and without an ounce of fat struggled to become that way BECAUSE of the public making comments like that, about them being fat and criticizing their appearances.)
