McSweeney's Mix: May Cause Drowsiness

Pirate enthusiast and rejected Real Worlder Dave Eggers persuaded Stereogum's favorite nü-folkies to cover each other's songs for the Believer bard's new compilation CD. Free with the June issue...

01 The Decemberists - "Bridges & Balloons" by Joanna Newsom
02 Spoon - "Decora" by Yo La Tengo
03 Constantines - "Why I Didn't Like August '93" by Elevator
04 CocoRosie - "Ohio" by Damien Jurado
05 The Mountain Goats - "Pet Politics" by Silver Jews
06 San Serac - "Late Blues" by Ida
07 The Shins - "We Will Become Silhouettes" by the Postal Service
08 Josephine Foster - "The Golden Window" by the Cherry Blossoms
09 Cynthia G. Mason - "Surprise, AZ" by Richard Buckner
10 Jim Guthrie - "Nighttime/Anytime (It's Alright)" by the Constantines
11 Espers - "Firefly Refrain" by Fursaxa
12 Two Gallants - "Anna's Sweater" by Blear
13 Vetiver - "Be Kind to Me" by Michael Hurley
14 Ida - "My Fair, My Dark" by David Schickele
15 Mount Eerie - "Waterfalls" by Thanksgiving
16 Devendra Banhart - "Fistful of Love" by Antony & the Johnsons
17 Wolf Parade - "Claxxon's Lament" by Frog Eyes

Sounds like an indie-yuppie's wet dream. (Speaking of which ... contest winner will be announced next week the week of 5/23 in a major magazine. Stay tuned.)

Wow. Bands I don't like covering other bands I don't like.

Well, at least the new Quasimoto disc is finally out!

Your content oddly resembles Pitchfork's some days . . .

You know... there's bands I like in here... but listed up there like that, they all look fairly dreadful. Like they're sapping eachother's will to live.

When the 7.8 or above comes from Pitchfork, you'll all be lapping it up. Don't kid yourselves.

7.8?? Yeah right. This has 10 written all over it. In fact, I predict once Pitchfork gets their hands on this, they will shut down their website and proclaim, "This is the greatest album of all time. All that is possible in music has been done. Goodbye."

It'll be like the Rapture, but for Indie Yuppies. They'll all diappear and start working clay or making macaroni sculpture.

you're all hypocrites. these are the exact same bands you read these blogs for. you wouldn't know about half of them if it wasn't for blogs and the OC. so shut yer trap and stop the self-loathing. you got nothing to prove to no one and what's on your ipod (cause yes, you all do have one) is no one's business but yer own.

and "indie-yuppie"? yeah, you're currently reading the web page that personifies that. who do you think you're foolin'?

We do know about them without The OC, because none of us watch it.

At least I hope we don't.

I haven't heard (though I've heard of) 2/3rds of these bands, nor am I an indie-yuppie, but I AM filled with rancor. So am I still a hypocrite?

I read stereogum because Scott runs it. And I like Scott. He's a nice person.

yeah, scott's pretty cool even though he secretly knows there is one other version of "bridges and balloons" out there that is his favorite!

stop...pocket time.

I listen to the POCKET Joanna remix all the time. It's gonna be part of the Stereogum May Mix when I get to posting it!

1) I read Stereogum for the Lohan updates. Am I a hypocrite?

2) I can (and will) self-loathe all I want. Nothing hypocritical about that.

3) I know most of these bands, have heard them, and hate them.

4) I also read Blues & Soul blogs, and I play in a country band. So I'm either a hypocrite x8 or I just like music and I'm not a hypocrite.

I'm corn-fused. Stop yelling at me.

"Sounds like an indie-yuppie's wet dream."

oh jesus. My first thought was how quickly I could get to a Believer-carrying newsstand. I guess I might be an indie-yuppie? is there a cure? or is the cure worse than the disease?

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...
