THE OBSERVER: Ricky Gervais told me there's a story that Liam thinks Spinal Tap are a real band. Is that true?
NOEL GALLAGHER: Yeah, he thought they were real people. We went to see them play in Carnegie Hall. Before they played, they came on as three folk singers from the film A Mighty Wind. We were laughing and he said: "This is shit." We said: "No, those three are in Spinal Tap. You do know they are American actors?" "They're not even a real band?" "They're not even English! One of them is married to Jamie Lee Curtis." "I'm not fuckin' 'avin that," he says, and walks off right up the middle of Carnegie Hall. He's never watched Spinal Tap since. He'd seen the film and loved it and thought they were a real band.

I saw them in Detroit, near the end of the show Liam put his tambourine on his head and glared at the audience for like two minutes at the end of one the songs. It was oddly hilarious. They were awesome that night by the way.

Everyone was right, I ordered the Sufjan Steven's cd about Illinois just a few days ago (set to be released in almost a month) and it came in the mail today! How awesome is that...not to mention the sticker it came with and the absurdly low cost of the cd (10 dollars really?) Plus, it doesn't hurt that I had heard a few songs off it on the internet and many of the others I had not heard surprised me like most new music doesn't. It's a solid album. I'm officially relieved from the insane hype I had for it.

I met spinal tap when I was six or so. it was intense. lenny or squiggy, whichever one was in the band, came over to me and my brothers and asked where we were from. we said pittsburgh. and in response he told a story about living in pittsburgh. he said he had lived there when the mills were still open. and he explained how you'd go to the corner to get an ice cream, and by the time you'd gotten back to your place(his word not mine), it would be black with soot.
I have carried this story with me forever, I'm 31 now. but until recently one thing never occured to me. he knew it wasn't real. he knew he was an actor playing a character. and I knew it wasn't real, my brothers had explained that the band was fake. I didn't know why or anything, and it seemed odd that they knew how to play their instruments(I had never heard of the monkees). but when he talked to me, he never dropped character. he spoke in the accent, in the character from the movie, to the six year old version of me. it was that important to maintain the illusion of spinal tap-ness, that he didn't even drop the gimmick when talking to a couple kids standing backstage. even better, he told an anecdote from his own life in the voice of character.

although a tough decision, mars volta is an american (well, mostly) band, and will tour the US pretty consistently. it's not all that often oasis comes around. i'd choose oasis.

I went to a Spinal Tap concert. I always knew they were a fake band but I thought it would be funny to see them live.
At first it was pretty funny, but about halfway through, the joke kinda wore off....and the songs weren't quite good enough to carry an entire concert...I walked out feeling pretty empty.
