New Old 97's - "Curtain Calls (live)"

The one chance I had to see Old 97's live was at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA back in 2001. But since I'd spent the most of the day record shopping in Atlanta after dropping a friend off at the airport, I was too exhausted to stand by the time the band started their set. Since then, I've had to live with the pain of missing a band I liked play at one of my favorite venues.

Lucky for me, then, that Old 97's are releasing a two-disc live album they recorded earlier this year.

They've been on-again, off-again for a while now, but they are still a great live act. The song "Curtain Calls" reminds me of when I was a young vagabond, doing things like moving to Athens, GA for no reason, and will forever be dear to my heart. Check it out:

The 97's remind me of being young and doing things for no reason, too...saw them at the Vic in Chicago when the kicked off their latest album tour, and they are always a good time.

After being a fan for a decade, I can say that these guys USED to be great but are now clearly going through the motions for the cash. Can't say that I blame them. Anybody got any extra cash?

omg omg. i used to BEG for "curtain calls" when rhett would play fez all the time. he refused to play it. not sure if i've ever seen them play it live as a band, but scott, you have definitely had some other chances to see them live since 2001. tsk tsk.

and i must disagree with the cranky poster who thinks they're "going through the motions." "drag it up" had some great songs. they're all older and it's harder to be a band, but they're still making their art. have some faith!

sean says above the band is now "only going through the motions" nothing could be further from the truth. I've seen them play in clubs down in Houston.. in Summer, with out any A/C and play their hearts out !! They amaze me with their energy every time I see them live. This includes the last 3 or 4 times I've seen them in the last year or two.

"We always knew there would be a live album in our future. We've been gearing up for a while. We knew it had to be recorded in Texas. We knew it would span a couple of discs. We knew that some of you out there would say, "Finally!" This is for you. Play it for your friends that have never heard of us. Play it loud at a party. If you really want the full effect turn the heat up in your house to about 104 degrees. The Legendary Gruene Hall was that hot the two nights we cut the songs you'll find here. Heck, the first night, some dude collapsed right in front of the stage from heat stroke, so for god's sake drink some water.

This is what we do. Rock is our business and business is good. See you soon.

Yours,

Rhett Miller
