Hop On the Chadwagon

Chad VanGaalen. Man. What can I say? He builds his own instruments and records in his bedroom. He's about seven feet tall. He makes his own videos. I think I let "Traffic" loop about 8 times before I realized it wasn't just one super-long super-cool song. Totally, totally great.

from his Flemish Eye Records page:
Chad VanGaalen - "Traffic" (MP3)
Chad VanGaalen - "Clinically Dead" (MP3)
Chad VanGaalen - "Somewhere I Know There's Nothing" (MP3)

from his Sub Pop page:
Chad VanGaalen - "Echo Train" (MP3)

I've seen a lot of comparisons to other indie heroes, so I'm not going to list them here, but I think this is going to be a hot show when he gets to New York in December.

Album of the year, if it wasn't a reissue.

This guy is pretty cool. We used to see him busking outside our local theatre in here in Calgary. He's a one man band - even when busking.

Fantastic find, Jim! I dig it the most.

It's not really a reissue, so much as a collection of a lot of Chad previous work--much of it not properly released.

It's a good album, so much so that I reviewed it awhile ago: http://bigyawn.net/cdreview.php?id=469

I saw Chad VanGaalen when he played the Blackcat in DC about a month ago.

The show was awesome, it was just him and a drummer for half the set and then 3/4 of the band Rogue Wave got on stage and rocked out with him.

and then for the rest of the show, no matter what band was on stage Chad was there, singing along and playing a tambourine.

He is the tallest nicest guy I have ever seen play at show at the blackcat, and live he can hit crazy ranges with his voice, which you either can't tell or doesn't hit on his album. which by the way is amazing too... and the inside of the CD is BRIGHT Pink.

It totally rules.

I was right up front for that Black Cat show. All 3 bands were great. Only disappointment was that Rogue Wave didn't play "Nourishment Nation"

i'd agree with the first poster, release of the year if it wasn't reissue, seems all the best ones are this year, with Grizzly Bear's getting the second time around

Saw this cat about a month ago in Charlotte in the SupPop Showcase. And he blew away the other band. Only had money for admission and three beers, no merch buying power.

I saw Chad VanGaalen play a set with Ron Sexsmith at the Calgary Folk Festival, and he was pretty much the highlight of the weekend.

chad is currently our artist in residence here in sackville

unfortunately he's only here for 2 more weeks, which sucks for us, but is better for the rest of the world i guess

extremely talented and hilarious guy
