New Videos: Madonna "Hung Up" VS Gwen Stefani "Luxurious"
My friend saw the Material Mom's not-so-secret guest appearance at Roxy the other weekend (Roxy alerted their mailing list a week before saying she was NOT coming, but New Yorkers called bullshit). She showed shortly after 2AM, (here's a pic), and selected gay men from the audience to take turns dancing with her. The roars were deafening of course ... But is Madonna still relevant in the music world?
People have compared the original pop blondie to Gwen Stefani since the latter's solo jawn dropped last year. (Incidentally, Gwen gets the lesbian vote.) Even Madonna's chimed in:

I think the new Madonna song is catchy as hell, extremely danceable, and pretty excellent. Little caught off guard by the focus put on her ass in the video, but that is Madonna for you.
This new Gwen single is a bit too sampled on the beat tip, but I like Gwen. Without Madonna there is no Gwen or any of these female solo pop artists.
And absolutely, Madonna is not only relevant but just as influential and powerful as any pop artist making music today. Look for the new album to be a "Music" like comebacka.

As far as the song goes, it's sort of disappointing that Madonna chose to take the easy - I mean, REALLY easy - way out of her pop music rut. She went with what was safe, which I guess isn't that bad of a thing, except what's safe for Madonna is pretty boring. "Hung Up" loops an ABBA single, puts a dance beat behind it, and has Maddy singing some of her worst lyrics since... ever. The melody is junk. Catchy, but junk. The production is okay; nothing to write home about. I'm sure there will be some amazing remixes in the future, but couldn't she have churned out a better single cut? It won't set any trends, all it does is follow them. Fuck, this could have been on Erotica and we would be none the wiser. I mean, come on. This is fluff. It's dull. It's derivative.
But it's still Madonna. God knows the album will be on iTunes repeat for at least a week upon its release.

I think that Gwen is trying too hard. Some of the songs on her CD are absolutely ridiculous. Madonna has been an innovator of music and creatively original for years. All Gwen did on her new stuff is get with rappers and create some crappy samples. Gwen WAS a rock goddess and now she's talking about "bling" and other such trendy things as money and fame. Personally, I find it to be rather boring, and just reprocessed. She should've stuck to rock-ska where she had both great beats and credible lyrics.
As for Madonna's crotch and ass sequences, well.. Madonna has one of the best bodies out there. I think it's great that at her age she can look better than most of the people half her age. We shouldn't try to be too critical of 'Hung Up', its a catchy pop tune not an artistic piece like `Frozen` or `Paradise not for me`. Take it for what it is, people might have called `Material Girl` a load of crappy pop years ago compared to something like `the Smiths` songs back then.
As for Gwen, she needs to dye her hair pink again and take Cyndi Lauper's missing place instead of Madonna's.
