New Strokes Video - "Juicebox"
For the first video from First Impressions Of Earth, 2001's NME coverboys took a page from Yo La Tengo by getting David Cross to funny up the dialogue (he's more amusing than Bob Pollard I guess). Strokes' "Juicebox" clip doesn't attempt the ROTFLness of "Sugarcabe," but we'll always look forward to seeing David (or his impersonator) on TV (though apparently not Fox).

man, I like the Strokes a lot, but it's really interesting to see that people with such similar, good taste in rock music would disagree so much about a band.
I have to admit, I hated the song at first. I like it more now, and the video is progressively helping me dig the song more (which is something good videos do).
Maybe it's just the rock nerd in me, but I love those Les Pauls. 'Stroke' definitely rock out more than usual, which is cool to see, too.
I thought the video itself was, artistically speaking, extremely well done. Well played by the director and whoever came up with the concepts (nothing earth-shattering or new, but cool nonetheless).
And you guys should listen to your friend David Cross, he's a funny dude.

"Juicebox" should cause every person to recoil upon hearing it for the first time. BUT after a couple listens I realized that ghostbustersesque bassline doesn't ruin the song. The video is down now so I can't comment on that but why is David Cross appearing in music videos he should work on his stand-up since his act is basically "americans are dumb" and "bush sucks." Hahahh that was clever David!

Actually, Cross' act is more like:
"I'm getting older, ish, now, and about half my friend have kids. And I think that's, uhh, rude."
Or if we're going for the political ones, it's more like:
"I was against the war from the beginning, I'm against the war currently. I'll be against the war for the next . . . oh, eight, ten years? I dunno."
And it's pretty funny with his nonchalant tone at the time . . . but whatever. I suppose you wouldn't find the political part of his comedy funny if you're on what would probably be labelled as "the Right", but still, honestly, it's not exactly 100% of his act (caveat: I have not actually seen him live, I have only heard a few recordings). He's a pretty funny man, and yeah, his political leanings are very partisan. But I really wouldn't make fun of them for not being clever. Example:
"I don't think Osama bin Laden sent those planes to attack us because he hated our freedom. I think he did it because of our support for Israel and our ties with the Saudi family and all our military bases in Saudi Arabia. You know why I think that? 'Cause that's what he fucking said!"
Say what you want, but that strikes me as a bit more sophisticated than the normal "Bush is teh Hitlar" stuff.

It would have been immature to install their new album with songs that sound similar to the ones they know will be popular on MTV and "POP" radio. These new sounds steer away from all of that, and steer closer to good natured, experimental music - which is what The Strokes were considered to be in the first place back in 2001. Not everyone likes it, and I think that's what they're aiming for. An interview from them says they would much rather play to a small crown than the otherwise sold-out stadium venue.

WHAT???!!! wow... this just goes to show how much of an effect EMPTYV has had on you. their music may have been "experimental" in the sense that it was an experiment to see if people would fall for it. the only other way this band could be, even remotely, considered experimental is if they were around when back in the 50's - bands like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, CAN, The Residents, Faust, etc. were far more "experimental" than anything this band has ever done - even more so than bands that ARE actually considered "experimental bands" today(seeing as the groups today are basically just expanding on the ideas of these older bands, but using modern technology and half the work) - AND THAT WAS BACK IN THE 70's!

Why do people hate this song so much? Seriously. It ain't brilliant, but it's ok. I'm just taken by the level of the outrage. Like "Juicebox" had been shat out of Bush's ass. You'd think it was "My Heart Will Go On" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit", both very popular songs, both for very different reasons, but essentially the same because anything that gets played that much is going to make you mental.
Now it hasn't been played THAT much (yet), but, really, people just hated "Juicebox" from the moment it was released, which, by the way, was about five minutes ago. I didn't love it instantly, but I'm actually starting to, it grows on you. But then that's how I've responded to each of their releases. I was kinda "eh" about "Last Night", and, later, "12:51", but I eventually bought each album because they snuck up on me. And I grew to dig each of their albums (Room On Fire, I think, is the better of the two.)
Or maybe it's just the Strokes themselves. The most frequent complaint I've heard from the kids is that they're just too fake, they don't "mean it, maaan". Is it really just because the Strokes come across as a bit too overtly blase and poseur-ish? Cuz, I'm sorry, the same is true of Brian Jonestown Massacre (regardless of how much dope they shoot; heroin just doesn't bestow street cred the way it used to) and dozens of other indie rock bands of varying popularity (read: sales).
And as for fans and supporters who are crying "departure"...I dunno; it still sounds like the Strokes to me. Honestly, they're the Strokes. They're pretty harmless.
Oh, yeah, and the video's cool, too.

I think the radio interview is based on an interview they had a while ago I happed to listen to somewhere... it was that guy who talks all weird and calls himself "Narf the Demon" or something stupid. I think he called them "Strokes" a few times without "The", and he asked them horribly dumb weird questions, then when they started to talk he'd interrupt and give them the answer. Basically questions with pre-made punchline answers...
Like he asked "What does New York create?" and Julian started to answer and said "Well that's kind of a difficult question but..." then the interviewer said "The Strokes! New York creates The Strokes!"
Anyways the song is great, it seems like The Strokes went off the vibe of people saying the second album was too much like the first, and just went completely crazy. (The second album roooocked by the way). I like the way the video contrasts the annoying radio guy with the song... and the stuff it shows during the song is good old music video weirdness/coolness.

i just wanted 2 say 2 the guy that claims the strokes r fake and not a experimental band and MAINSTREAM and not indie, SO WHAT?, everything has already been invented in rock music, like u said, back in the 50s and 60s people already have experimented all there was to be experimented,so what do u expect them to do? and we the new generations can´t get stuck in the past i mean of course the´re classic, and amazing, but there´s got to be new bands, so i don´t care if the´re MAINSTREAM or whatever or if i´ve been brainwashed by EMPTYV, either way indie or not we consume music, it is a product we consume, so if they give me what i want (music that i enjoy, and makes my life happier) i don´t see the problem, the fact that something is popular does not take away its quality, its still good music, take the beatles for example, they were really popular the´re still popular today, does it make there music bad?, the music is all that matters, as long as i enjoy the music, the´re image or label or stuffs like that r not important (i´m aware that u probably wont read this, i don´t care i still had to say it)

Yeah, I think the Strokes is one of the greatest rock bands since Radiohead. Their third album is the manifestation of a more mature and complete sound. First Impressions marks a radical departure from Is This It and Room on Fire. Instead of just hanging on to the same old tricks that had brought them fame five years ago, the band boldly decided to step beyond their usual new wave/garadge/retro feel by beginning to embark on a musical path that is pointing towards a more unique and defining direction ...I saw them live in Montreal last week, May 7th 2006, and it was a great show...Casablancas is way more energetic and talkative than what we are usually accustomed to. They even played 4 encores!
